There were 54 at the start of this penultimate round of the 2019 World Triathlon Series, contested in a Sprint format (750-20-5).
After the 750m swim, Vincent Luis exited the water first, followed by Belgium's Marten Van Riel and American Ben Kanute. At the exit of transition, these three men were joined by Britain's Jonathan Brownlee and Australia's Matt Hauser. The five men worked together and completed the entire bike leg as a group.

Vincent Luis entered T2 first, but the group of five had only a 19-second lead over the rest of the peloton. On the run, Jonathan Brownlee took the lead, followed by Marten Van Riel. Vincent Luis quickly found himself a few lengths behind the two escapees, alongside Ben Kanute and Matt Hauser.
Ahead, the Briton extended his lead over the Belgian, who was caught by two men who had come back from the peloton, Spain's Mario Mola and New Zealand's Hayden Wilde, while Vincent Luis was in 6th place.
Ultimately, Jonathan Brownlee raced to an unexpected victory. The Briton had completely missed his season with no top 10 finishes before Edmonton. His best performance in WTS 2019 had been an 11th place in Bermuda in April.
Mario Mola took 2nd place, which allowed the Spaniard to move up three places in the world series standings to 2nd position. Marten Van Riel took the 3rd step of the podium.
