Katie Zaferes had hoped to celebrate her 30th birthday with a 4th consecutive victory in Leeds on the World Triathlon Series circuit, but Great Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown spoiled the American's birthday party.
Coming out of the swim, it was Great Britain's Jessica Learmonth who led the way. Frenchwomen Cassandre Beaugrand and Léonie Périault were in 7th position at 10 seconds and 19th position at 31 seconds, respectively.
From the start of the bike course, six women moved to the front: Katie Zaferes (USA), Sophie Coldwell (GBR), Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR), Taylor Spivey (USA), Jessica Learmonth (GBR), and Vitoria Lopes (BRA). Starting slightly behind, Cassandre Beaugrand managed to bridge the gap but was eventually dropped and caught by the main pack.
At T2, Sophie Coldwell, Jessica Learmonth, and Katie Zaferes were the first three athletes to start the run, while Léonie Périault racked her bike in 13th position at 1'56" and Cassandre Beaugrand in 26th place at 3 minutes behind the leaders.
At the front, Great Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown, seeking her first World Series victory, and at home no less, took the lead from American Katie Zaferes at the end of the first lap.
After this first loop, Léonie Périault was 9th, and Cassandre Beaugrand made a good comeback to 14th position. By the end of the 2nd lap, Périault had gained another place (8th at 2'13") while Beaugrand was still in 14th place at 3'31".
Entering the final lap, Léonie Périault was still 8th, neck and neck with Britons Non Stanford and Vicky Holland, while Cassandre Beaugrand had dropped to 16th place.
Up front, Georgia Taylor-Brown was not caught. She won on home soil and broke Katie Zaferes' winning streak, with Zaferes taking 2nd place. Another Briton, Jessica Learmonth, took 3rd place.
Léonie Périault ultimately secured a strong 6th place, on a stage where she had already performed well last year (5th). Cassandre Beaugrand finished 13th.
