Cervélo is known for its involvement in the pursuit of the best possible aerodynamics and its focus on speed. Since the creation of the Soloist in the early 2000s, the brand has sought to define a new vision of the aerodynamic bike. The new S5 continues in this vein and illustrates the mission to make cyclists faster.

The photos show larger tube sections to optimize UCI-allowed shapes, a new fork design that helps simplify the entire front end, and increased wheel/tire clearance, making room for the new Reserve 52/63 wheelset, which was co-developed to improve speed capabilities.
In total, although the surface area has been increased, aero drag has been reduced by 65 grams while the bike’s weight has been lowered.
Simplify
In the quest for speed, users often want to try a more aero position, through a longer stem or a more aggressive stance. These adjustments could be complicated on the previous S5. On the new model, it has become very easy to install a new stem. All necessary spacers are supplied with the bike, and there is only one screw length, instead of the old version where each height had a specific screw. The handlebar attachment is simpler to use and has a five-degree rotation to adjust the position. By reducing its previous complexity, the system is also 53 grams lighter.

Refine
Cervélo has also improved handlebar comfort and modified its shape to achieve a perfectly flat transition between the top and the shifters. Instead of the shims on the previous S5 handlebar, a two-bolt interface allows infinite tilt adjustment between 0 and 5 degrees. Today’s bike fit studies are moving away from seatposts with large setback, and the new S5 comes standard with a seatpost with 15 mm setback on most sizes (compared to 25 mm setback on the previous S5). Older seatposts are compatible with the new generation, and the 40 mm long seatpost with 25 mm offset is still available for those seeking a more extreme fit.
Improve
New UCI regulations on aerodynamic design have allowed for deeper aero profiles and to extract a little more performance from what is already the fastest aero bike on the market. You’ll notice a slimmed head tube and bottom bracket shell area, as well as a more aggressive shape on the trailing edges of the tubes. As the new S5 is only compatible with electronic shifting, the derailleur hanger is slightly modified, as are the overall shapes of the bike.
Tire Clearance
Wider wheels and tires are more aerodynamic and more comfortable. The S5 can accommodate a 34 mm (measured) tire and is optimized for the new, wider Reserve wheels fitted with 28 mm tires. These wheels, developed under Turbulent Aero protocols, save just over five watts.

“Turbulent”, what does that mean?
The real advantage of Turbulent Aero lies in the wheel’s behavior in turbulence. In other words, what it does when the wind blows, which is almost always the case. Reserve and Cervélo consulted and developed a deep rim profile that improves handling in changing angles. In terms of riding, it is more stable, more “planted” and more comfortable. It requires less attention from the cyclist, which increases their confidence. The Reserve 52/63 is 50 g faster in laminar flow (traditional), and 54 g faster in turbulent flow than the Reserve 50/65.
