RACE SUMMARY
After the 3800 m swim, nine men broke away. Leading the pack were Australian Josh Amberger (47'28), followed by German Jan Frodeno (double winner in 2015 and 2016), Briton Alistair Brownlee, Dane Daniel Bakkegard, American Tim O'Donnell, Germans Maurice Clavel and Patrick Lange (two-time defending champion 2017 and 2018), Australian Braden Currie, and Swede Jesper Svensson, all within 16 seconds.

The rest of the field was more than 3 minutes behind, including some of the best cyclists: German Sebastian Kienle +4:50, Canadian Lionel Sanders +4:55, Australian Cameron Wurf +4:58, and two other Germans, Boris Stein +6:48 and Andreas Dreitz +6:59.
At the front, Alistair Brownlee was the most aggressive, as he was five weeks ago at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice where he took 2nd place, and gained about twenty seconds after 14 km. At km 23, German Jan Frodeno brought everyone back to the Briton and set the pace. Two-time defending champion Patrick Lange was 1'25 behind, and the strong cyclists had closed the gap: 3'38 for Cameron Wurf, 3'41 for Lionel Sanders, and 3'43 for Sebastian Kienle.
After the first 50 kilometers, five men broke away: Maurice Clavel, Josh Amberger, Tim O'Donnell, Jan Frodeno, and Alistair Brownlee had a 2'52 lead over Braden Currie and 3'05 over Cameron Wurf (7th), 3'07 over Sebastian Kienle (8th), and 3'13 over Lionel Sanders (11th). A few kilometers later, unfortunately having a bad day, Patrick Lange stopped and abandoned his title, likely due to a fever the day before the race.

At km 95, Josh Amberger had dropped about forty seconds behind his lead companions. Cameron Wurf was still closing in at 2'21, followed by Boris Stein at 2'23 and Sebastian Kienle at 2'25. Maurice Clavel was the next victim to drop from the lead group, leaving Frodeno, O'Donnell, and Brownlee to break away.

At km 141, the trio still held a 2'32 lead over Wurf, Stein, and Kienle. This was the moment Jan Frodeno chose to accelerate the pace. Tim O'Donnell and Alistair Brownlee couldn't keep up and were 1'05 and 1'23 behind respectively at km 167.
At T2, the German had opened up an impressive gap in the last few kilometers, while Alistair Brownlee had lost some ground:
1 - Jan Frodeno
2 - 2'19 Tim O'Donnell
3 - 3'45 Cameron Wurf
4 - 4'02 Sebastian Kienle
5 - 4'03 Boris Stein
6 - 4'07 Alistair Brownlee
7 - 4'09 Philipp Koutny
8 - 4'23 Kristian Hogenhaug
9 - 4'27 Lionel Sanders

After 9 km of running, Jan Frodeno seemed very strong, alone in the lead, and maintained the gaps with his pursuers. Tim O'Donnell was 2'25 behind, Sebastian Kienle 4'44, Alistair Brownlee 4'54, Lionel Sanders 5'20, and Cameron Wurf 5'58. At km 17, these gaps continued to increase: the German was 3'08 ahead of O'Donnell, 5'12 ahead of Sebastian Kienle, and 7'45 ahead of Alistair Brownlee.
At km 28, Jan Frodeno was still the strong man of the day. He now had a 4'15 lead over Tim O'Donnell and 6'57 over Sebastian Kienle. At this pace, the path to a 3rd crown seemed clear.
Especially since at the 35th km, nothing stopped the German. Barring a bonk, he was heading for victory with a 6'43 lead over Tim O'Donnell and 9'17 over Sebastian Kienle.

He finished 8'26 ahead of American Tim O'Donnell and another German, Sebastian Kienle, by 10'51. The only Frenchman in the race, Cyril Viennot, finished 19th at 32'40.
