Frederik Van Lierde won today's Ironman Lanzarote Club La Santa 2019. This edition was once again marked by strong winds throughout the race, especially on the bike climb up Mirador del Rio.
The Belgian long remained in 2nd place on the bike behind Germany's Andreas Raelert, but the latter had to stop around the 150 km mark and then definitively abandon the event due to mechanical problems, thus letting the lead slip away. The five-time Ironman Nice winner and 2013 Ironman World Champion then reached T2 in the lead, just ahead of Christian Kramer and Slovakia's Jaroslav Lovacic. Starting cautiously, he made his move before the half-marathon to take the lead and was never seen again.
Frederick Van Lierde won in 8h51’16 (50:25 swim / 5:01:32 bike / 2:50:23 run) and claimed his 9th title at this distance. He finished ahead of Germany's Christian Kramer (2nd, as in 2015) +4’52 and Spain's Emilio Aguayo Munoz +9’39, who was very happy with his 3rd place in his very first Ironman distance race.
