Week 1: a cross-border Grand Depart and tough tests
The peloton will set off on Saturday, May 8, from Trieste for a resolutely international and hilly start.
The first days: The inaugural stage will conclude in Trieste after an incursion into Slovenia and a tough finish (three climbs in the last 40 kilometers). The next day, the race will connect Ljubljana to Koper entirely on Slovenian territory, before returning to Italy between Cervignano and Possagno, then running along Emilia-Romagna towards Misano Adriatico.
First showdowns between favorites: from the 5th stage (Filottrano – Sarnano-Sassotetto), the climbers will battle it out on a short (139 km) but intense (3300 m of elevation gain) format, an opportunity for the race to pay tribute to Michele Scarponi, ten years after his passing. After a passage along the Adriatic coast and a first individual time trial uphill to Campo di Giove, the first week will conclude with the race returning to Naples (for the sixth consecutive year) and a high-altitude finish at Monte Livata.

Week 2: the heart of the Apennines and Tuscany
After a well-deserved rest day, the race will cross the central Apennines.
The Palombara Sabina – Norcia stage (218 km and 3600 m of elevation gain) will set the tone before a calmer transition towards Mugello.
The riders will then discover an unprecedented finish in Tuscany during the “Trappa Bartali” leading to Zeri and Passo dei Due Santi.
The second weekend promises to be decisive : first with an XXL alpine stage on Saturday (187 km and 4900 m of elevation gain chaining Ghisallo, Culmine di San Pietro, Miragolo San Salvatore and Alino to arrive at Piani di Bobbio), then with a 37.3 km time trial between the Monza Autodrome and Milan on Sunday.

Week 3: the alpine apocalypse and the Roman finale
The final act of the Giro will open with a legendary stage between Sondrio and Aprica (192 km and 5700 m of elevation gain), marked by the double ascent of the formidable Mortirolo and Gavia Pass.
After a transition stage towards Vo’, the high mountains will reclaim their rights towards Madonna di Campiglio, then towards the terrible Monte Zoncolan, climbed via the Ovaro side. The peloton will conclude its journey with the traditional final parade through the streets of Rome on Sunday, May 30, where the winner will hoist the prestigious Trophy Senza Fine in the Eternal City for the fifth consecutive year.
In brief: the numbers and anecdotes of this 2027 edition
Friuli-Venezia Giulia: this is only the second time in history that the region hosts the Grand Depart, after 1981.
Slovenian incursions: this is the 4th time a stage will start outside Italy, in Slovenia.
Milan and Naples : Milan will bring the total number of stage finishes hosted in its history to 91, while Naples will celebrate its sixth consecutive year of presence on the Giro map.
Legends of the summits: the Gavia Pass makes its return (10th appearance), as do the Mortirolo (17th ascent) and the Zoncolan (8th finish).
A commitment to spiritual tourism
A major novelty of this 2027 edition, the Giro d’Italia is partnering with Italy’s great pilgrimage routes and spiritual itineraries. Through dedicated content, maps, and strong territorial promotion, the Corsa Rosa will highlight essential historical routes such as the Via Francigena, the Via Romea Strata, as well as the paths of Saint Benedict and Saint Francis, thus strengthening their tourist and cultural appeal.
