RAR EXALT Generation 3: New 40- and 55-mm carbon wheels

RAR introduces the third generation of its EXALT wheels, available in two rim profiles: 40 mm and 55 mm. This new version features a high-modulus M40J carbon construction, reduced weight, and revised geometry to improve stiffness, comfort, and aerodynamics. Both models are already available.

The new RAR EXALT 4.3 features a 40-mm rim profile designed to prioritize versatility and lightness. The EXALT 5.3, with a 55 mm height, is designed more for aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining a certain level of versatility.

Both models share an internal width of 24 mm and an external width of 31 mm. Their rounded profile is designed to ensure a smooth transition with 28- to 32-mm tires, in order to minimize aerodynamic drag and sensitivity to crosswinds.

A New M40J Carbon Construction

For this third generation, RAR has upgraded the structure of its rims with a higher proportion of high-modulus M40J carbon fiber. According to the brand, this dual-core construction increases resistance to deformation by 30% compared to the previous generation. The layup has also been optimized to better dampen vibrations.

Efforts have also focused on reducing peripheral mass. Each rim is 30 g lighter, representing a claimed 2% reduction in inertia. RAR highlights easier acceleration and pickups, as well as improved braking efficiency.

The wheels are built with 24 Sapim CX-Ray stainless steel spokes, featuring an elliptical cross-section of 2.3 × 0.9 mm. This choice prioritizes aerodynamics, as well as durability and ease of maintenance.

Two hub options: ESO and VECTOR

The EXALT 4.3 and 5.3 are available with two types of hubs. The RAR ESO is the lightest option, while the new VECTOR represents an alternative that prioritizes mechanical strength and durability.

RAR reports a 7% increase in lateral stiffness compared to its previous FIRST hubs. The flange geometry has been redesigned to widen the wheels’ support base and improve the distribution of spoke tension.

The hubs use standard 6902 bearings, which are easy to replace, and 36-tooth steel ratchet rings. On the VECTOR models, riders can also choose between a quiet or louder freewheel, with a reported difference of up to 10 dB depending on the spring used.

Finally, RAR emphasizes the care taken during assembly: each wheel is hand-built, with a specified tolerance of ±2.5% for tension balance.
