The Swim Course for the 2026 Ironman World Championship in Kona

The day will begin with a 3.8-km swim in the crystal-clear waters of Kailua Bay, one of the most iconic settings in the world of triathlon. The course takes the form of a long, narrow rectangle starting from Kona, with approximately 1.2 miles out, a short cross-course section, and then the return to the pier. Visibility is often exceptional, with tropical fish, coral, and sometimes sea turtles in the swimmers’ field of view.

But the scenery shouldn’t distract from what matters most: positioning yourself well, swimming with a relaxed stroke, finding a pace without getting caught up in the crowded start, and exiting the water cleanly before tackling the long Hawaiian day.

The Bike Course for the 2026 Ironman World Championship in Kona

The bike leg will take athletes along Kona’s legendary 180.2 km route, from Kailua-Kona to the turnaround point at Hawi, featuring a long out-and-back stretch on the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway. After exiting the transition area and covering the first few kilometers around Kona, the race quickly shifts into its unique setting: a wide, exposed road running through lava fields, between the ocean and volcanic slopes. The course isn’t mountainous, but it’s grueling, consisting of long rolling stretches, false flats, bursts of speed, and above all, a wind that’s often decisive—especially on the climb toward Kawaihae and then Hawi.

The run will feature the legendary Kona Marathon, with 42.2 km that encapsulate all the toughness of the world championship.
