POC Launches Its Time Trial Helmet, the Sonal

POC unveils the Sonal, its fastest time trial helmet to date, the result of years of innovation and close collaboration with performance experts at EF Pro Cycling.

Rather than focusing solely on the head, the Sonal takes a holistic approach to aerodynamics by incorporating the rider’s body into its design. A unique feature: it comes in two widths, tailored to shoulder width rather than head size. Its elongated front section diverts air away from the high-pressure zone, reducing drag and guiding the airflow around the helmet and the cyclist.

The Sonal builds on the legacy of the Tempor, a revolutionary helmet launched in 2012 that redefined the rules of time trials. Today, most teams use larger helmets that optimize airflow over the entire body—a concept pioneered by POC. Together with EF Pro Cycling, the brand sought to go even further, driven by the constant pursuit of aerodynamic gains. Wind tunnel tests show gains of 15 to 20 watts at 60 km/h compared to POC’s already very fast TT models.

The two widths accommodate cyclists with shoulder widths <37 cm or >37 cm, while sharing a single internal size (51–59 cm). Vision was a key focus: the helmet offers a wide field of view without effort, even in the time trial position. Two magnetic Clarity visors (clear and tinted) allow for instant adjustment to light conditions. Beneath its aerodynamic shell, the Sonal meets EN 1078 and CPSC standards, with a structure designed to absorb impacts. Comfort hasn’t been overlooked: neutral balance in the time trial position, modest weight, lightweight padding, and a precise fit via a Boa system. Despite its large surface area, the helmet weighs only 440 g (narrow) and 490 g (regular), including the visor. POC wanted a helmet that was faster, but also better suited to a wider range of cyclists—hence these two new width options.

Available in Hydrogen White and Uranium Black Matt, it will be offered in limited quantities on poc.com/fr starting in October.
