Mavic COMETE 85: Aerodynamics at Its Best

Developed with a clear goal in mind—“maximum aerodynamic speed”—the new COMETE 85 is the fastest wheel ever measured by Mavic. Its 23 mm Aero Wide profile, optimized for 28 mm tires, reduces drag and improves rolling efficiency.

The full-carbon construction and new aero spokes offer an explosive combination: speed, stability, and control. Tested in a wind tunnel, the COMETE 85 requires only “65.15 watts to overcome aerodynamic drag,” representing a 2.9% gain over a competitor. Paired with the COMETE Road Disc, it forms the ultimate system for triathlons and time trials. The rear disc, featuring asymmetrical flanges and Adaptive Layup construction, weighs just 965 g.

Both wheels use Mavic Ceramic bearings to reduce friction and maximize speed. The 21 carbon spokes on the 85 model provide lateral stiffness and immediate power transfer. The Disc version adds an ultra-stiff platform to maintain speed on rolling terrain. Every watt becomes “free speed,” thanks to extensive optimization in the wind tunnel and laboratory. Mavic claims up to an 18% reduction in drag on the spokes compared to competitors.

The 40-tooth ID360 system ensures instant engagement. The lightweight hubs and Locked-In Spoke Heads stabilize spoke tension over time. Each wheel undergoes 57 internal tests, followed by double validation in the lab. The pros at St Michel–Auber93 are already riding them in real-world conditions. Endurance testing is equivalent to 700,000 km of on-road riding.
Adaptive Layup technology optimizes stiffness, weight, and vibration absorption. The Aero Wide profile stabilizes the wheel in crosswinds and improves control at high speeds.
