The first edition of Orbea Gravel Aiaraldea concluded by exceeding all expectations. What began as an ambitious project aimed at promoting adventure cycling in the Aiaraldea region turned into a resounding success, both in terms of participation and organization, generating great satisfaction among the hundreds of cyclists who took part as well as within the organizing team.

A unique route blending history and discovery

A total of 620 participants set out to tackle the challenges proposed by the organizers. Beyond the physical effort and the joy of riding, cyclists enjoyed a unique experience thanks to aid stations set up at iconic sites of local heritage:

  • The monumental complex of Quejana, offering an immersion in an exceptional medieval setting.
  • The sanctuary of La Antigua, one of the day’s most memorable moments, where participants were surprised to be able to ride their bikes right inside the sanctuary.
  • The Artomaña winery, which welcomed cyclists to the sound of live music, allowing them to recharge their batteries in a friendly atmosphere.

According to the organizers: “We wanted to create much more than just a bike ride: a true journey through the culture of Aiaraldea. Seeing the participants’ wonder as they entered the sanctuary of La Antigua or rode through the vineyards with the Sierra Salvada as a backdrop confirms that we succeeded in offering something unique.”

Amurrio, the heart of the event

The atmosphere didn’t end at the finish line. The Village area set up in Amurrio became the meeting point for participants, companions, and locals.

Music, entertainment, and a spirit of camaraderie accompanied a typical Basque finish-line meal. Participants were able to recharge with a hearty dish of beans prepared by Putxeran, the reigning Basque Country champion of this specialty, before celebrating their achievement with a glass of txakoli, the region’s iconic white wine.

With a widely acclaimed first edition, the Orbea Gravel Aiaraldea demonstrates that gravel is much more than a cycling discipline: it is an original way to discover and promote a region.
