Review of the Continental Terra Speed ProTection 45 Tires

Review of the Continental Terra Speed ProTection 45 Tires: When Fast Gravel Riding Finally Starts to Feel Right. For a long time here at 3bikes, our definition of a fast gravel tire was largely based on a model that had become an extremely reliable benchmark: the Vredestein Aventura in 700×44. These are smart, well-balanced tires, capable of delivering that now-rare combination of serious performance, safety, and true off-road versatility. But the Continental Terra Speed ProTection in 700x45C tell a different story. Not necessarily a contrast. More like an evolution. As if modern gravel riding had matured even further. As if the pursuit of speed had ceased to be solely about raw performance and had come to be as much about composure, predictability, and dynamic stability.

And honestly, from the very first few kilometers, something stands out: these tires aren’t trying to give the impression of speed. They’re trying to make speed feel more natural. That’s a huge difference.

Mounted on our LYTI equipped with ENVE AR40s—probably one of the most interesting modern wheelsets we’ve ridden in recent months—the 700x45C Terra Speed ProTection Full Black tires immediately give the impression of a system designed as a whole. Not just a setup. A true common language between tire, rim, and terrain.

Modern gravel riding is no longer just about going fast

This is probably the biggest change in recent years. For a long time, fast gravel riding sometimes felt like a mere attempt to apply road-bike logic to trail riding: high tire pressure, stiff tires, immediate responsiveness, but handling that could be twitchy, tiring, or unstable as soon as the terrain got rough. The Terra Speed tires tell a completely different story.

Yes, they’re fast tires. Very fast, in fact. The tread pattern—with very low, tightly packed lugs in the center—leaves no doubt about that. But their true strength lies elsewhere. Above all, they give the impression of understanding how a modern gravel bike should now ride fast. Not through harshness. Not through a bumpy ride. Not through constant jitteriness. Through smooth, consistent performance.

On the ENVE AR40s, everything immediately falls into place

Let’s be honest: the Terra Speed’s handling is also deeply tied to the setup used during this test. And in particular to those famous ENVE AR40s with a 25 mm internal width, which had already completely changed our perspective on the modern wheel during their road and gravel tests.

With the 45 mm Terra Speed tires, the consistency is immediately apparent—or rather, you can feel it. The tire feels perfectly supported. The tire works wide, cleanly, and extremely stably. You never get that sensation of the tire “floating” or twisting slightly during hard, rapid pedaling.

And that’s probably where the Terra Speed becomes truly impressive. Because at 45 mm, it achieves something that remains rare: maintaining a huge volume of air without ever feeling mushy. The bike remains responsive. Very predictable. Very precise. But with shock absorption that’s become incredibly modern.

At Mohawk’s, Étienne immediately understands where this build is headed

Once again, Étienne is handling the setup at Mohawk’s. And honestly, the more we delve into modern high-end testing, the more we realize that a good setup already tells us a great deal even before the first few kilometers. Because a modern 45-mm gravel tire mounted on a 25-mm internal rim is no longer just “a big tire.” It’s a precise balance between air volume, casing support, pressure, and overall dynamic performance.

And from the very first minutes in the workshop, one thing stands out: the Terra Speed immediately seems right at home on the ENVE AR40s. No unnecessary struggle. No installation that gives the impression that the tire and rim are just trying to put up with each other. Everything feels logical. Natural. Coherent. The kind of setup where you can already tell before riding that the bike is going to perform just right.

Étienne puts it very simply while mounting the tire: “Honestly, it fits really well.” And that detail matters much more than you might think. Because a great modern tire isn’t just about going fast. It also has to intelligently adapt to the real-life demands of a modern cyclist: tubeless setup, maintenance, changing terrain, long rides, adjusted tire pressures, and regular use. And here, the Terra Speed tires immediately give the impression that they were designed with exactly that in mind.

A tire that doesn’t turn gravel riding into a folktale

There’s also something quite interesting culturally about this Terra Speed. Because it completely rejects the “gravel folklore.” It doesn’t tell the story of slow-paced adventure. It doesn’t tell the story of panniers. It doesn’t tell the story of contemplative bikepacking.

Instead, it’s about the gravel riding of those who ride fast. Very fast, sometimes. Dirt roads. Fast-rolling sections. Speedy trails through the woods. Constant accelerations. Long, intense rides. And above all, this new generation of setups capable of maintaining extreme performance even when the pavement disappears.

On the LYTI, it even becomes quite unsettling. At times, the bike literally stops feeling like it’s being slowed down by the terrain.

A very different feeling of speed compared to a road tire

Of course, coming straight from our test of the 30-mm Continental GP5000 TT TR on the road, the comparison was almost inevitable.

But that’s precisely the point: the Terra Speed never tries to replicate the feel of an ultra-fast road tire. It delivers something else entirely. A more effortless speed. More cushioned. More sustained. A speed that seems less based on aggressive acceleration and more on the bike’s ability to stay composed when the terrain gets rough. And that’s where Continental really shines right now.

Because we see exactly the same modern philosophy as on the GP5000 TT TR: performance no longer comes solely from what’s hard, radical, or spectacular. It comes from what allows you to maintain a high speed without exhausting the rider.

On long, rough sections, this is extremely striking. Where many fast tires start to make the bike feel twitchy or tiring, the Terra Speed maintains a very impressive sense of dynamic composure.

The terrain stops “interfering” with the bike

That’s probably the feeling that comes up most often after several weeks with these tires. The terrain gradually stops disrupting the bike.

Note: let’s not exaggerate. This is still gravel riding. Vibrations are still there. So are impacts. But the Terra Speed filters out a tremendous amount of unnecessary micro-shocks without ever disconnecting the rider from the surface. And most importantly, it does so without creating a sense of drag. That’s where this tire really stands out as top-tier. Because many tires can be comfortable. Others can be fast. Very few can truly do both without any obvious compromise. The Terra Speed pulls it off remarkably well.

An extremely modern feel for the terrain

In fast corners, the handling is particularly interesting. The tire maintains a clear sense of the angle of lean. It doesn’t “drop” abruptly. Nor does it float. It holds its line with a kind of very contemporary composure.

Once again, the internal width of the ENVE AR40s plays a huge role in this feeling. The tire feels perfectly secure. The casing works smoothly. The tire’s profile remains consistent even when the load increases significantly.

And honestly, this is probably one of the most well-balanced gravel setups we’ve ridden in recent months. Not the most spectacular. Not the most radical. But perhaps one of the smartest.

The real luxury: a tire that’s easier on the body

It’s often something you only come to understand later on in the world of modern cycling. The best setups aren’t necessarily the ones that impress the most for ten minutes. They’re the ones that continue to perform perfectly after three hours.

And the Terra Speed clearly belongs in this category. Because it drastically reduces unnecessary fatigue: fewer corrections, less unnecessary vibration, less tension, less mental noise. The bike stays calm. Stable. Fast. Predictable. And the more kilometers you cover, the more valuable this quality becomes.

Protection, Installation, Real-World Use

The version tested here is the ProTection Tubeless Ready Full Black in 700x45C / 45-622. Continental obviously positions it as a performance tire, but with a genuine level of protection for real-world gravel riding. And honestly, you can feel that right away when riding. The tire never gives that impression of excessive fragility that you sometimes find on certain ultra-fast models.

Mounting it on the ENVE AR40s was particularly straightforward, consistent with what we’d already observed with the GP5000 TT TR. No endless struggle. No life-or-death struggle with the air pump. No dramatic scenes in the garage. The tire naturally settles into place on the rim. And that, too, is part of what defines the high-end segment today.

Compared to the Vredestein Aventura: two visions of modern gravel

The Vredestein Aventura tires, which we’d tested extensively up to that point, remain excellent tires. More versatile in certain conditions, very reassuring, and extremely reliable for those who want a true gravel tire capable of handling everything intelligently.

But the Terra Speed pushes the envelope further toward modern, fast gravel riding. It has a more focused philosophy. It’s more performance-oriented. More precise. More “race-oriented” in the way it reads the terrain.

And above all: it’s more consistent with this new generation of wide rims, like the ENVE AR40. You can really feel that the industry is now starting to view the gravel tire as a dynamic component in its own right, and no longer just as a compromise between performance and comfort.

The 3bikes Verdict

The 45-mm Continental Terra Speed ProTection tires are among those that perfectly illustrate where modern gravel riding is headed. A less caricatured gravel scene. Less quirky. Less obsessed with the idea of surviving the apocalypse. And more focused on actual speed, stability, and the overall coherence of the bike system.

Mounted on the ENVE AR40s of our LYTI, they deliver an extremely refined ride. Fast. Very fast, in fact. But above all, easy to ride fast. And that’s probably much harder to achieve.

They don’t give that artificial feeling of a tire trying to impress with every acceleration. They offer something more mature: a bike that stays fast longer, more smoothly, with less fatigue and greater control.

And in modern gravel riding, this kind of intelligence is probably worth much more than just a time on a Strava segment.

Continental Terra Speed ProTection 45 at a glance…

Pros: remarkable performance for a 45 mm gravel tire, excellent consistency on modern wide rims like the ENVE AR40, very impressive stability at high speeds, modern shock absorption without feeling mushy, excellent feedback on cornering, very reassuring handling on fast sections, easy tubeless installation, very good balance of speed, comfort, and protection, a highly refined gravel tire for modern fast gravel riding.
