Fast—very fast, in fact—the 30-mm Continental GP5000 TT TR isn’t just about pure time trials, though. Mounted in just a few minutes on our ENVE AR40s, it reveals something even rarer: a speed that’s become more stable, more predictable, and almost easier to handle. A top-of-the-line tire in every sense of the word, designed to go fast, but above all to ride smoothly.

In cycling, we often talk about tires as simply a point of contact with the road. That’s true, of course. But it’s also a gross oversimplification. A great modern tire is more than just a point of contact. It’s a filter, a revealer, an accelerator, and sometimes even a translator. It reveals a wheel’s true potential. It highlights the consistency—or inconsistency—of a bike setup. And it quietly enhances everything on a well-designed bike that can still be improved.
The 30 mm Continental GP5000 TT TR clearly belongs in this category. It’s not just a run-of-the-mill fast tire. Nor is it simply a “high-end” tire. It’s a tire that feels like it was designed around an idea that has become central to modern cycling: speed no longer comes solely from what’s hard, thin, or spectacular. It comes from what rides just right. And sometimes, what rides just right seems almost too simple to notice.

That’s exactly what this GP5000 TT TR is all about. A tire that, on paper, is presented by Continental as the fastest in its GP5000 Tubeless Ready family, designed for time trials, triathlons, road racing, and even track racing, and now available up to size 30-622. But out on the road, its appeal goes far beyond the mere fantasy of a time trial. Because in 30 mm, mounted on a modern rim, it becomes something else entirely: a rare balance between top-tier performance, predictable grip, practical comfort, and a sense of continuity.
Continental: the German art of letting the road speak without raising its voice.
Before we dive into the tire itself, though, we have to talk about the people who make it. Continental is not a brand that needs to fabricate a last-minute pedigree. In the tire industry, it’s a long-established company with an engineering heritage that spans cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. On the road, its Grand Prix 5000 family has established itself as the pinnacle of its performance lineup, with a product range that’s become very clear: GP5000 for tube tires, GP5000 S TR for high-end all-around tubeless tires, GP5000 AS TR for tougher rides and harsher weather, and GP5000 TT TR for the uncompromising pursuit of speed.

What’s interesting about Continental is that the brand doesn’t present this hierarchy as a simple stack of models. It frames it as a trade-off. Its Black Chili technology is based precisely on this: the constant tension between grip, rolling resistance, and durability. Improving one parameter always means compromising on another. Continental explains this very clearly in its own technical presentation.
And that’s exactly why the TT TR is so compelling. This tire doesn’t try to do everything. It aims to excel at what matters most when the priority is actual speed.
A feel that speaks volumes
There are tyres you understand from the very first moment. Not necessarily in every detail, but just by holding them. The 30 mm GP5000 TT TR is one of those.

As soon as you take it out of the box, you notice something. The feel. The apparent suppleness. The way the casing responds under your fingers. The sensation of a very serious product, but without any overt stiffness. You immediately sense that this isn’t a “hardened” tire designed to survive anything, nor is it a model that offers reassurance through sheer thickness. This is a tire that, first and foremost, seems designed to ride fast, track straight, and perform cleanly. And that first impression is confirmed during installation.
Installation: less than five minutes, no fuss
Étienne was the one who mounted them for us. And sometimes, in a test, this kind of detail is worth more than a lengthy protocol. Because a tire, before it’s even ridden, must first be willing to be lived in.

Here, the verdict was immediate: it took less than five minutes to mount them on the ENVE AR40s—no drama, no swearing, no side shows in the garage. Étienne put it very simply: “Honestly, super easy to mount.” And that’s no small compliment.
On modern wheels with generous inner widths, tubeless installation can quickly turn into a gamble. Some tires require persuasion, soap, a compressor, a little faith, and sometimes a mental break. Here, none of that is needed. The tire slips into place with a real sense of mechanical ease. You can feel that the bead is working well, that the casing is settling into place, and that the whole assembly isn’t fighting against the rim. Continental actually recommends at least 30 ml of sealant for the initial setup, along with spinning the wheel and inflating it to the maximum recommended pressure before final adjustment.
Of course, the fact that it’s mounted on an ENVE AR40—a modern wheel optimized for 29- to 30-mm tires in our test—further reinforces this sense of coherence. But that takes nothing away from the tire’s merits. Quite the contrary. A very good modern tire is also one that doesn’t turn the mounting process into a trial by fire.

Why is it so easy to install?
There are probably several reasons for this ease, but one of them becomes apparent almost immediately: This GP5000 TT TR feels like it’s made of a material that’s a bit livelier, a bit more supple, and a bit softer to the touch than other tires that are more versatile or designed for durability.
Note: Continental doesn’t describe the TT TR as “softer” in its simplified marketing materials. The brand positions it primarily as the fastest of the GP5000 TR lineup, with the logical trade-offs that entails regarding other factors like durability or absolute protection. But in handling—and then on the road—you can very clearly feel that this tire is designed to be more responsive, with a more refined feel, and more focused on the sensation of speed than on long-distance comfort.
And this is where we need to be precise: this suppleness is by no means a sign of flimsiness. It’s not a vague tire. It’s a tire with excellent grip, but with a kind of immediate responsiveness—a way of getting down to business without delay.

What the 30 mm Really Changes
For a long time, a fast tire had to look narrow to be credible. It was almost a cultural reflex. The thinner it was, the more you felt it “rolled.” Modern road cycling has completely shifted that perception.
With a well-designed, properly mounted 30 mm tire on a rim engineered for it, you get something infinitely more interesting than just a comfort boost. You get a tire that performs better. A better-supported casing. A more consistent contact patch. Superior stability. Smarter tire pressure management. And thus, very often, a speed that’s easier to maintain in the real world.
The GP5000 TT TR is now available in sizes up to 30-622, which is no small matter. This speaks to something very important: even a Continental tire explicitly designed for time trials now recognizes that modern performance is no longer just about reduction, but about optimization.
On the ENVE AR40 wheelset we tested, this 30-mm tire inflated to 4 bars delivered exactly that: a smoother, more composed ride that felt faster without any unwanted jitter. The kind of setup that doesn’t make you feel like you’re tearing up the road, but rather gliding along with almost insolent ease.

On the road: a tire that doesn’t demand applause
The first pitfall, with a tire this fast, would be to describe it as a constant slap in the face. That wouldn’t be true. The GP5000 TT TR doesn’t initially impress with an aggressive character. It impresses with the absence of any internal resistance. It just rolls. Quite simply. Very fast. Very smoothly.
The tire doesn’t feel like it’s adding anything artificial to the bike. It removes what gets in the way. It eliminates small losses. It reduces invisible friction. It lets the bike settle into its pace with remarkable ease. It’s almost more unsettling than an exuberant tire, because the performance isn’t announced—it’s simply there.
On flat terrain, you immediately feel this smoothness. On slight inclines, the tire helps maintain speed. When accelerating again, it responds without any unnecessary lag. And above all, it never gives the impression of being brilliant for ten minutes and then tiring afterward. There’s a kind of consistency in its performance, as if its true quality weren’t just to make you go fast, but to make that speed more comfortable.

Grip, road feel, confidence: the TT tire that doesn’t sacrifice intelligence
This is often where the most “time-trial” tires become less appealing for real-world use. They know how to go fast, but in exchange they demand a kind of total mental commitment. They want you to trust them without always earning that trust in every situation. The GP5000 TT TR, on the other hand, stands out precisely because it avoids falling into that stereotype.
Thanks to the technological foundation of the GP5000 line—notably the Black Chili compound and the Lazer Grip shoulder pattern that Continental highlights on its high-end road tires—the tire maintains true predictability when cornering. You enter a turn without tension. You can feel the tire working. It doesn’t overreact. It doesn’t float. Nor does it “drop out.” It holds its line with a kind of very modern composure. And it’s precisely this combination that makes it superior to many very fast tires: it doesn’t turn the pursuit of speed into a nerve-wracking gamble.
The difference from other tires in the GP5000 lineup
This is where we need to be helpful, not just admiring. Because not all GP5000 tires tell the same story. And at 3bikes, we believe it’s important not to recommend the TT TR to everyone just because it might be, in absolute terms, the most technically exciting option.
GP5000 S TR: the ultimate all-rounder
Continental presents the S TR as the modern standard for tubeless road tires: lighter and faster than its predecessor, with reinforced sidewalls and a clearly versatile design. This is the one we recommend to most demanding recreational cyclists—those who want to go fast, ride often, and do everything well, without getting too bogged down in specialized gear.

GP5000 AS TR: The Serious All-Season Tire
The AS TR is the choice for those who ride a lot, for long periods, in tougher conditions, and who need greater protection and peace of mind. Continental explicitly positions it as the tire for year-round riding, with greater puncture resistance than the S TR. At 3bikes, this is the one we’d recommend to riders who don’t want to slow down when winter arrives, or to those who prioritize consistent performance over an obsession with lap times.

GP5000 Tube Type: the noble classic
The tubed version of the GP5000 remains a top-tier tire, easier to handle for certain setups, offering all the DNA of the line without the tubeless design. It’s still a solid choice for those who still appreciate the simplicity of a traditional setup or prefer a more classic take on a performance tire.
GP5000 TT TR: the pinnacle when speed is the priority
Then there’s the TT TR. According to Continental, it’s the fastest in the TR family.
It’s not a tire we’d recommend to everyone, but we’d enthusiastically recommend it to those who know exactly what they’re looking for:
- A cohesive, high-end setup
- A modern wheelset
- A rider who loves to feel the power
- A riding style focused on speed, performance, triathlon, racing, or fast long rides
- Someone who understands that the ultimate tire isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all tire
In short: the S TR is the best all-around choice. The AS TR is the best companion. The TT TR is the most refined option when speed becomes the primary focus.

The ultimate tire—but in the smart sense of the term
The word “ultimate” is often misused in cycling. We use it to describe what’s extreme. But extreme isn’t always smart. The 30 mm GP5000 TT TR strikes us as “ultimate” for another reason: because it seems to solve an equation that modern cycling has long pursued without ever quite nailing it.
It’s very fast. It’s very easy to install. It offers very secure grip. It makes the bike feel smoother. It lets you take advantage of modern tire width without sacrificing the very essence of performance. And above all, it doesn’t make speed feel like a punishment. That’s probably where its true greatness lies.

Who We Recommend It To at 3bikes
We definitely recommend it to:
- Demanding cyclists who ride on modern tubeless tires
- Competitors and triathletes
- For those who ride fast for long periods
- For anyone looking to wring every last advantage out of a wide wheelset such as the ENVE AR40
- For those who understand that 30 mm can now be a high-performance solution, not a compromise
We recommend it less for:
- For those who want an all-purpose tire for year-round use
- For those who prioritize maximum durability
- For those riding on older or very narrow rims
- For those who are looking above all for peace of mind over long distances

True luxury: a tire that fades into the background while you ride
Deep down, perhaps the greatest compliment you can pay this Continental is this: after a while, you stop thinking of it as a tire. You think about the bike. Its smoothness. Its handling. Its effortless speed. The way everything feels more connected.
A great tire isn’t there to remind you every second that it’s high-performance. It’s there to make your ride more precise. Faster. More natural. Smoother. And in this very rare category, the Continental GP5000 TT TR 30 mm is now a major benchmark.
The Continental GP5000 TT TR 30 mm at a glance…Pros: extremely easy to mount on our ENVE AR40 rims, top-tier performance, a very natural feeling of speed, remarkable grip for such a fast tire, immediate responsiveness, excellent support in the 30 mm width, modern comfort without sacrificing dynamism, exceptional consistency on today’s wide rims, a top-of-the-line tire in every sense of the word Cons: less versatile than a GP5000 S TR; durability and ruggedness are inevitably less of a priority than with an AS TR; less suitable for older wheels or those ill-suited to wide tires; premium price; requires proper installation to reach its full potential Type: Tubeless Ready – Intended use according to Continental: time trials, triathlons, road racing, track – Position in the lineup: the fastest model in the GP5000 TR family, according to Continental – Highlighted technologies: Black Chili, Tubeless Ready; the GP5000 line also features Lazer Grip and, depending on the version, Active Comfort and Vectran – Tested size: 30-622 – Test setup: ENVE AR40 – Sealant recommended by Continental for initial setup: at least 30 ml – Weight: 280 g – Price: €108.95 => Buy the Continental GP5000 TT TR on sale for €65.99 Contact: continental-tires.com |
