Shimano expands its CUES range with new lighter 2×11-speed components

Japanese manufacturer Shimano announces the expansion of its CUES range with the arrival of new 2×11-speed components, designed for versatile road, gravel, and off-road riding. This evolution aims to offer a lighter, more ergonomic, and accessible drivetrain to a wide audience of cyclists.

A new, lighter 2×11 configuration

Among the new products are the RD-U6040 rear derailleur and the CS-RS400-11 cassette (11–36 teeth), incorporating HYPERGLIDE technology. This combination now allows for the design of bikes with a 2×11-speed configuration within the CUES range, an option that was not previously available.

The cassette offers an announced gear range of 327%, suitable for both intense group efforts and long climbs. It also stands out with a reduced weight of approximately 200 grams compared to equivalent LINKGLIDE models. For its part, the RD-U6040 rear derailleur features a compact design and a weight reduction of approximately 100 g, with a clear orientation towards road and trail use.

Expanded ergonomics and compatibility

This new drivetrain is compatible with the DUAL CONTROL ST-U6030 levers already in the catalog. Their design is inspired by the Shimano 105 series, with particular attention paid to ergonomics. According to the manufacturer, the shape of the hoods and the position of the levers have been optimized based on studies of different hand morphologies, to improve comfort and control.

The entire system has also been designed to adapt to modern frame evolutions, notably by allowing the mounting of wider tires thanks to an adjusted chain line.

An intermediate offering in the Shimano range

With this new U6040 variant, Shimano positions its offering between the Shimano Tiagra R4000 and CUES U6030 groupsets. The objective is to provide a mechanical 2×11-speed solution combining versatility and controlled cost.

The RD-U6040 rear derailleur is announced at a suggested retail price of €74.99, while the CS-RS400-11 cassette is priced at €59.99. Availability will depend on local markets and distributors.

A complete range of associated components

This evolution is part of a broader ecosystem including:

  • HOLLOWTECH II double chainring cranksets (FC-U6040-2 and FC-U6030-2)
  • An FD-U6030 front derailleur optimized to facilitate mounting and improve tire clearance
  • Hydraulic disc brakes (BR-U6030 and BR-RS405)
  • 11-speed compatible chains

With this update, Shimano continues the development of its CUES platform by strengthening its position in the entry and mid-range segments, while integrating technologies from its higher-end groupsets.
