As Paris-Roubaix approaches, where he could make history with a fourth consecutive victory, Mathieu van der Poel returns to his home turf in a new short film by Shimano: “This is Home”. This film offers an unprecedented look at one of the most spectacular riders of his generation, away from the podiums and the spotlight.

An intimate and rare immersion
For the first time, Van der Poel opens the doors to his daily life. Filmed between Antwerp and Moraira, the film explores his training routes, his habits, and the places that shape his performances. It also reveals more personal moments, alongside his partner Roxanne Bertels and their dog.
The objective: to show what goes on behind the scenes. Where performance is built, through repeated efforts and the constant pursuit of mastery.
A philosophy of performance
With “This is Home”, Shimano highlights a vision of sport based on consistency and invisible work. An approach fully shared by Van der Poel, whose instinctive style relies on meticulous preparation and complete trust in his equipment.
The film is part of an already popular series highlighting other athletes, and confirms a strong idea: great victories are born long before the finish line.
A champion with a unique career
From a legendary lineage — grandson of Raymond Poulidor and son of Adri van der Poel — Mathieu van der Poel has established himself as a key figure in modern cycling.
Dominant in cyclo-cross, explosive on the road, and strong in mountain biking, he embodies rare versatility. His successes in prestigious races like Paris-Roubaix have solidified his status as an iconic rider.
A film to understand the man behind the athlete
Directed by Anthill Films, the short film goes beyond a simple sports portrait. It offers a more human vision of the champion, rooted in his origins and environment.
Already available on YouTube and Shimano’s social media channels, “This is Home” is aimed at both cycling enthusiasts and those who wish to discover what goes on behind the scenes of an exceptional athlete.
