Castelli Espresso 2 Test: Comfort and Endurance

We often talk about the fastest outfits, the most aerodynamic ones, those that promise to save a few watts in a sprint or a few seconds at the top of a climb. But the reality of cycling, the one most cyclists experience week after week, is much more often played out elsewhere. It’s played out in everyday rides. Those you string together without necessarily having a race number on your back. Those that sometimes start fresh in the morning, last several hours, and where you mainly ask your gear to be forgotten. To be just right. Comfortable. Coherent. Reliable. It is precisely on this ground that Castelli built the success of its Espresso range. And that’s also what makes this second generation particularly interesting. With the Espresso 2, the Italian brand is not looking to revolutionize the formula. It refines, corrects, adjusts, polishes. A new jersey, revised bib shorts, and in our case a matching vest as well as the range’s socks to complete the set: on paper, the promise is clear. To offer an outfit designed not for exceptional days, but for all those days when you really ride.

Castelli and the art of clothing you choose without thinking

In the world of cycling, some brands stand out for their heritage, others for their ability to set trends. Castelli, however, belongs to that rarer category of brands that have managed to do both. Founded in Italy and deeply rooted in performance culture, it has spanned decades by accompanying the evolutions of cycling, without ever losing that very particular connection with clothing designed for riding.

A simple, well-designed outfit, true to the Castelli spirit… enough to go for a ride with confidence, without overdoing it.

We have often talked about Castelli on 3bikes. And for good reason: few brands have contributed as much to shaping the textile imagination of modern cycling. From Lycra shorts to the most advanced aero suits, including pieces that have become almost essential in many cyclists’ wardrobes, the Italian brand has always had this ability to combine innovation, technicality, and real-world use.

But ultimately, what often makes the difference with Castelli is not just the pursuit of speed or pure performance. It’s also this rather subtle understanding of how cyclists actually ride. Not just on race Sundays. Not just in ideal conditions. But all the other days. Those where you set out for two hours, then eventually four. Those where you’re unsure about the weather. Those where you want an outfit capable of doing everything without having to think about it.

This is exactly what the Espresso line has been about since its beginnings. And this new Espresso 2 generation confirms this philosophy: that of a set destined to become a reflex. Almost a given.

First impressions: an outfit that immediately inspires confidence

Some gear seduces at first glance with its extravagance or radicality. And then there are those that immediately reassure with their coherence. The Espresso 2 clearly belongs to the second category.

Jersey, bib shorts, vest and socks… right out of the package, the Espresso 2 set displays a rare obviousness: here, everything is designed to work together, without overdoing it.

Right out of the bag, the set gives off this impression of a finished product. No need to overdo it. No need to add visual embellishments. Everything seems to be in its place. The jersey, the bib shorts, the black vest added to the set, and even the socks: you immediately feel that you are not looking at a juxtaposition of pieces, but rather an outfit designed as a whole.

The jersey displays a sober line, elegant, with tone-on-tone logos that discreetly sign the product without making it ostentatious. The bib shorts, for their part, immediately inspire confidence through the perceived quality of the fabric and by that particular density that suggests real support, without excessive rigidity. As for the vest, it naturally completes the set, in a more utilitarian but equally refined.

The first contact therefore confirms a rather simple intuition: Castelli perfectly understands this type of outfit. And it shows immediately.

The Espresso 2 jersey: comfort as a guiding principle

The Espresso 2 jersey does not seek to impress with an extreme cut or radical construction. Its ambition lies elsewhere. And it becomes very clear once worn.

The tags are still there… but already, the Espresso 2 jersey hints at what it promises once on the road: comfort, and nothing else to think about.

The Air_O Stretch fabric, already used on the first generation, remains at the heart of the project. And it’s quickly clear why. The material offers that very particular sensation of a textile that is both supple, breathable and structured. The horizontal elasticity perfectly accompanies the movements of the upper body, while the low vertical deformation allows the rear pockets to maintain good stability, even when loaded a little.

This is a detail that is often underestimated until you’ve truly experienced it over several hours in the saddle. A jersey can be light, pleasant, well-cut… then lose all its coherence once the pockets are full. Here, that’s not the case. The whole remains in place, the line stays clean, and you retain that feeling of a well-designed garment, even when you head out for a proper ride.

On the skin, the fabric proves particularly pleasant. Light, airy, but without feeling fragile. You quickly sense this desire to offer a jersey capable of handling long hot days while maintaining a certain overall shape. At no point does the Espresso 2 give the impression of being a simple “ultra light” jersey sacrificing everything for ventilation. It remains a true road jersey, with structure, support, and a certain formal elegance.

The sleeves fall just right. The fit at the bottom of the jersey is precise. The pockets are well-sized. And the whole gives off that rare impression of immediately natural clothing. As if the jersey required no adaptation time.

The Espresso 2 bib shorts: where the outfit truly comes into its own

If one had to name the centerpiece of this outfit, it would probably be the bib shorts.

Even when hung, the Espresso 2 bib shorts already hint at their promise: precise construction and comfort designed to last, well beyond the first kilometers.

Not because the jersey would be secondary, but because this is often where the truth of such an outfit lies. A jersey can seduce. Bib shorts, however, must convince over time. On the road. Kilometer after kilometer. And on this point, Castelli seems to have paid particular attention to its work.

The Espresso Doppio fabric here constitutes the foundation of the experience. From the very first moments, you find a particularly soft, almost dense feel, with that very successful matte appearance that immediately gives an impression of quality. Once in the saddle, the material perfectly accompanies the pedaling. The support is real, but never oppressive. There is support, without that sensation sometimes too present on certain high-end bib shorts that try to do too much in terms of compression.

The straps have been revised, and it shows. Softer, more pleasant, they are forgotten once the ride begins. The slightly raised waist also contributes to this impression of a more homogeneous, more stable, cleaner overall look.

But of course, at the heart of all this, there is the insert. And Castelli has not held back by renewing its Progetto X2 Air Seamless. On long rides, this is typically the kind of detail that doesn’t shout its excellence, but gradually imposes it. No hard spots, no particular discomfort, no feeling of premature wear over the hours: the pad remains discreet, and that is undoubtedly the greatest compliment one can pay it.

The leg endings also fully contribute to the product’s success. They perfectly hold the bib shorts in place without causing uncomfortable over-compression. Here again, nothing ostentatious. Just a very precise execution.

The socks and the vest: the details that complete a true outfit

In many reviews, accessories quickly take a back seat. Yet, they often contribute to the overall experience much more than one might think.

Still imbued with the workshop scent, the Espresso vest awaits its first ride… like an intact promise of protection and lightness.

In the case of this Castelli set, the socks provide that aesthetic finish and functionality that naturally completes the outfit. The height is just right, the support convincing, the breathability very present. Nothing spectacular in itself, but exactly what you expect from an accessory you forget about once on the road.

The black vest, for its part, undoubtedly deserves more attention. Because it truly transforms the use of the set.

For this type of long-duration comfort-oriented outfit, one spontaneously thinks of summer rides. But in reality, a good portion of rides take place in the shoulder seasons, on still-cool mornings, hesitant starts to the day, or descents where the air quickly reminds you that the sun hasn’t quite won the battle yet. It is precisely in this context that the vest truly comes into its own.

Once folded, it is forgotten in a pocket. Once put on, it immediately provides the necessary protection without unbalancing the outfit. The cut remains close to the body, flapping is limited, and you maintain that clean silhouette that avoids the “utility piece added at the last minute” effect. Here again, you feel that Castelli perfectly masters this category.

All white, still immaculate… the Espresso socks almost hesitate to discover the road, but we already know they won’t stay that way for long.

On the road: an outfit that never seeks to be noticed

This is often where the best gear is born. Not when it impresses, but when it fades away.

Once on the bike, the Espresso 2 never seeks to remind you of its presence. It forces nothing. It doesn’t dramatize the outing. It simply accompanies the movement, the passing hours, the variations in intensity, the changes in temperature.

The jersey ventilates effectively as soon as the pace settles in. The bib shorts support without constricting. The straps are forgotten. And the vest allows the outfit to adapt without breaking its coherence. Very quickly, you stop thinking about the clothing. And that is probably where Castelli best succeeds in its project.

On the bike, everything becomes simple: you forget the outfit… and finally focus on the essentials: riding, enjoying, and racking up the kilometers with pleasure.

Because ultimately, the Espresso 2 doesn’t speak to the cyclist looking to display a racer’s radicalism. It speaks to those who want to ride long, often, comfortably, with an outfit capable of absorbing the reality of cycling as it is practiced most of the time.

There is something very right about this approach. Something that reminds us that the most successful gear is not necessarily the one that impresses the most, but often the one you choose almost mechanically before setting off, because you already know it won’t disappoint you.

A more mature, more sustainable, more everyday vision of cycling

With the Espresso 2, Castelli is not just signing off on a product update. The brand also reminds us, in a way, that modern cycling is no longer limited to the sole logic of spectacular performance.

Of course, cycling remains a sport. Of course, equipment continues to evolve under the impetus of aerodynamic research, marginal gains, and competitive uses. But in parallel, another way of riding has emerged. More regular. More mature, perhaps. A way of practicing where one seeks less to impress than to last. To enjoy. To repeat rides without getting tired of them.

The vest naturally comes out of the pocket: when conditions change, the outfit follows, without ever breaking the rhythm or the desire to ride.

The Espresso 2 fits exactly into this evolution. This outfit does not tell the story of studio photos, WorldTour sprints, or exaggerated promises. It tells the story of real cycling. That of long mornings. Of endurance rides. Of kilometers accumulated without drama, but with pleasure.

And in this category, Castelli undoubtedly delivers one of its most coherent proposals.

The 3bikes.fr verdict

With this new Espresso 2 generation, Castelli achieves what is often the most difficult in the world of cycling apparel: improving a bestseller without betraying its spirit.

The jersey confirms all the qualities that made the range’s reputation, with a particularly pleasant fabric, excellent stability, and a true sense of balance between lightness, breathability, and fit. The bib shorts, meanwhile, impress with their overall comfort, the quality of their support, and the relevance of their insert, clearly designed for long hours in the saddle. As for the vest and socks, they intelligently complete the set, further reinforcing this impression of general coherence.

And then there’s the color of the set… discreet without being bland, elegant without trying to show off, to the point that we truly enjoyed wearing it, ride after ride.

But beyond the technical details, what is most appealing here is the product’s philosophy. The Espresso 2 does not try to be the most extreme outfit on the market. It simply seeks to become the one you wear most often. The one that almost always works. The one you grab before a ride without asking questions.

And ultimately, that might be the most accurate definition of a great cycling outfit.

The Castelli Espresso 2 outfit in brief…

Pros: remarkable overall comfort, particularly successful bib shorts, great coherence between the different pieces, high-end finishes, an outfit designed to last on the bike.

Cons: a premium price positioning, a more endurance-oriented approach than radically racing, and a deliberately sober character that may seem less demonstrative to some cyclists.
