The cycling season has begun, and with it, the anticipation for the prestigious Monuments: Milan-Sanremo, Tour des Flandres, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Tour de Lombardie. These century-old classics, pillars of cycling legend, are at the heart of a new 40-page special issue published by L’Équipe.

This special issue revisits the specific characteristics of these mythical races, their decisive sectors, and their great historical moments. From early 20th-century pioneers like Henri Pélissier to essential figures such as Eddy Merckx, record holder with seven victories at Milan-Sanremo, the magazine recounts the feats that have shaped these events.

Today, the rivalry between Tadej Pogačar and Mathieu van der Poel enlivens these one-day races. For the past three years, the two champions have largely dominated the Monuments, embodying a new era of top-level confrontation.

The special issue also delves back into legendary moments, such as the 1980 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège won in extreme conditions by Bernard Hinault, or Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle’s historic double at Paris-Roubaix in 1992 and 1993. The feats of Roger De Vlaeminck, a true legend of the Hell of the North, are also highlighted.

Women’s cycling is not forgotten. Following in the footsteps of Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt, victorious at Roubaix in 2025, a new generation of champions, particularly Belgian and Dutch, is making its mark on these mythical terrains.

Finally, to celebrate the newspaper’s 80th anniversary, this issue traces the history of the Champion des Champions Trophy, from Jean Séphériades in 1946 to footballer Ousmane Dembélé.
