Garmin expands its range of accessories dedicated to cyclist safety with the launch of the Varia RearVue 820, a smart taillight equipped with an even more powerful radar. Designed to improve the safety and peace of mind of road cyclists, this new model combines advanced vehicle detection, enhanced light output, and leading battery life.
Smart Rear Traffic Detection
The major new feature of the Varia RearVue 820 lies in its next-generation radar, capable of analyzing not only the presence of vehicles but also their behavior. The system now identifies vehicle size (small, medium, or large), detects their lateral movements, and assesses the threat level based on their speed and trajectory.
Information is transmitted in real-time to compatible Garmin Edge bike computers or via the Varia mobile app, allowing cyclists to anticipate risky situations, especially when vehicles change lanes.
Thanks to an expanded field of view, the radar covers multiple traffic lanes and offers a range of over 175 meters. A specific function also alerts the cyclist when vehicles are traveling at the same speed or remaining behind, waiting to overtake.

Optimal Visibility, Day and Night
In terms of lighting, the Varia RearVue 820 becomes the most powerful taillight ever designed by Garmin. Visible from over 2 kilometers away, it offers several lighting modes adapted to all conditions:
- day flash
- night flash
- solid mode
- peloton mode
Via the Varia app, users can customize their light sequences, adjusting the intensity and duration of flashes according to their preferences.
Another notable new feature: automatic detection of slowdowns and stops. When activated, this function triggers a flashing brake light sequence to alert following vehicles (function can be deactivated).

Light output:
- 25 lumens in solid mode
- 8 lumens in peloton mode
- 40 lumens in night flash
- 100 lumens in day flash
Long-lasting Battery Life and Broad Compatibility
Designed to support the longest rides, the Varia RearVue 820 boasts impressive battery life, with up to 24 hours in day flash mode and up to 30 hours in radar-only mode.
Its compact and modern design integrates a USB-C port for fast charging, as well as a new seatpost mount ensuring stable attachment on most road and gravel bikes.
The device is compatible with Edge bike computers, certain Garmin smartwatches, and the Varia app. Some watches can even broadcast voice alerts signaling approaching vehicles, a feature currently offered in public beta.

Price and Availability
The Garmin Varia RearVue 820 is available now at the recommended retail price of 299,99 €.
