Absoluteblack: style and performance to customize your bike

While the bike market is flooded with attractive but often fragile Asian components, some European brands, like Absoluteblack, focus on durability, performance, and aesthetics, for a bike that is both unique and efficient. We tested a range of products from the Slovenian brand over 4000 km.

At a time when the bike market is diversifying significantly, some Asian offerings attract with their price and design. They focus on customization, hardware, or visually appealing components, without their technical advantages always being demonstrated. We are thinking in particular of the many derailleur cages sold on Chinese platforms: attractive on paper, they are rarely irreproachable once mounted and used in the long term.

However, grouping all alternative brands into the same basket would be a mistake. Some European houses have long established themselves thanks to a demanding approach: intelligent design, quality machining, carefully selected materials, and collaboration with high-level athletes, such as Tadej Pogačar.

Absoluteblack, a Slovenian brand known for its premium road and MTB components, is an excellent example. Where part of the market focuses on price and appearance, the brand justifies its positioning with products designed to last, function efficiently, and simplify maintenance. The elements presented here are those I tested over 4000 km, in real (and often difficult!) conditions.

Today, customizing a bike is no longer limited to wheels or groupsets. More and more cyclists are looking to optimize every detail: hardware, braking, or maintenance tools. Absoluteblack develops a coherent approach to customization, where aesthetics never overshadow function.

Ultimate Piston Press & Brake Tool

Maintaining hydraulic disc brakes can quickly become cumbersome, especially when replacing pads. Absoluteblack’s Ultimate Piston Press & Brake Tool solves this problem. Designed to safely, precisely, and reproducibly reset pistons, it replaces improvised methods (screwdrivers, tire levers, pry bars) that risk damaging pistons and seals. The pressure applied is perfectly uniform and concentric, limiting any stress on sensitive components.

Made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer and titanium hardware, the tool combines lightness and durability. It can also serve as a bleed block, practical for routine maintenance of hydraulic systems. At only 12.5 g, it fits on the workbench or in a backpack, allowing you to remain self-sufficient during long rides or trips. Its use is not daily, but it allows for clean work on expensive components.

Flat Mount Hardware

Hardware is often underestimated in bike optimization. Titanium Flat Mount bolts replace original steel screws with a lighter, corrosion-resistant, and visually higher-quality solution. Mounted on a Shimano Ultegra groupset with Absoluteblack pads, they add a unique touch to the bike.

These screws feature low-friction washers, limiting caliper movement during tightening. Centering relative to the rotor is more stable and precise, which facilitates mounting and reduces subsequent adjustments. A small detail that truly makes a difference during assembly!

Flat Mount Adapters

Flat Mount adapters offer an aesthetic gain and a slight weight reduction, about 10 g per caliper. This helps give the bike a unique character, without compromising functionality.

GraphenPads Brake Pads

The GraphenPads, tested here for Shimano, are undoubtedly the most interesting element in terms of pure performance. These pads use a graphene-enriched compound, aiming to improve modulation, heat dissipation, and braking consistency. Regarding longevity, more kilometers will be needed to draw definitive conclusions, but after more than 3000 km of use, several points are already clear. Noise is significantly reduced in wet or humid conditions. It doesn’t disappear completely; some squealing may still occur, but it is much rarer and significantly less pronounced than with Shimano pads. Heat dissipation is also improved, resulting in more consistent power during long descents. This type of situation doesn’t often occur in normal use, but I deliberately push this kind of test on a reference descent, braking continuously for several minutes. The feeling is undeniable: power remains more stable and present when the system is hot compared to original pads (Shimano resin).

Price: €44.99 instead of €49.50 per pair

Once again, these components perfectly illustrate the idea that useful customization exists. Aesthetics and performance are not opposed when intelligently designed. The appeal of Absoluteblack products lies in their ability to combine visual pleasure, personalization, and a slight performance gain. This will obviously not make you a potential Tour de France winner, but enjoying yourself, riding a bike you like and identify with, contributes to going faster. Neuroscience has already demonstrated this, but that’s another debate!
