The French Cycling Tourism Federation (FFCT) publishes the 4th edition of its Charter for Safe Cycling Facilities. Fully updated, its objective is to support local authorities and developers in designing public spaces that are truly adapted to cyclists. This new reference document will be officially presented at the Sports and Parasports exhibition, from November 18 to 20, 2025, at Porte de Versailles, Paris.
For over twenty years, the Federation has taken a critical and constructive look at cycling infrastructures. It formulates concrete recommendations based on the field experience of practitioners and its experts, with three main ambitions:
- Make facilities legible and coherent at the national level;
- Raise awareness and train elected officials, technicians, and users in safer and more responsible mobility;
- Encourage daily and leisure cycling (commuting, errands, cycling tourism, etc.).
This new edition brings together all major types of facilities: cycle paths and lanes, road networks, specific urban zones. It draws on numerous concrete cases, showing, through good and bad examples, what to do – or avoid – to secure roads and cycling routes.
The Charter also emphasizes several essential points:
- The necessity of regular maintenance of infrastructures, a key condition for limiting accident risks;
- The importance of reporting defects via the Suricate application, developed with the Ministry of Sports;
- Cyclist training at all ages, thanks to programs supported by the Federation and the State, such as the “Savoir rouler à vélo” (Learning to cycle) program for children or “back in the saddle” initiatives for adults.
By publishing this new version, the Federation reaffirms its commitment to putting its expertise at the service of local territories. It supports local authorities in the design, improvement, and maintenance of safe cycling facilities, by fostering dialogue between elected officials, technical services, and users.
Unique in its kind, the French Cycling Tourism Federation is today the only federation to integrate all uses of cycling into its statutes and daily practice. Present at the Sports and Parasports exhibition, it will be available to elected officials and technicians to discuss, share its feedback, and answer all questions related to the implementation of safe and adapted cycling infrastructures.
