The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has taken note of the decision by the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) to order the provisional suspension of the “Maximum Gear Ratio” Test Protocol, following a complaint from equipment manufacturer SRAM. However, the international body disputes this decision.
This protocol, which aimed to evaluate the impact of limiting gear ratios on race speed and rider safety, was to be tested during the Tour of Guangxi (October 14-19, 2025). Due to this measure, the planned test is cancelled and the protocol is temporarily suspended.
In a press release, the UCI states its surprise at the intervention of a competition authority regarding an initiative supported by all stakeholders in professional cycling. It finds it surprising that a complaint filed by an American company against a Swiss sports association, concerning tests planned in China, is being handled by a Belgian authority.
The objective of the protocol was to analyze the effect of limiting gear ratios to enhance the safety of riders, other peloton participants, and spectators.
The UCI announces its intention to appeal the BCA’s decision and is considering adjustments to the protocol to allow the implementation of the tests desired by professional cycling stakeholders.
