In the world of cycling apparel, sleeveless vests are often treated as secondary accessories. A little extra windbreaker, pulled on at the top of a col, taken off on the first climb, and often forgotten at the bottom of a pocket. And yet, well thought out, a vest can be much more than that. It can become a central piece of kit, a link between the seasons, the disciplines, and even lifestyles. That is precisely what the ML Hybrid Vest offers, the fruit of a collaboration between two Swiss brands that left nothing to chance: Assos, the undisputed master of cycling technicality, and Mammut, a pioneer of mountain equipment. Together, they have produced an atypical, even bold product: a hybrid vest with an outdoor DNA, designed for cycling — but not only.

Designed for action, not for the shop window
From the very first moments, you understand that this vest does not follow the standards of the classic cycling wardrobe. Here we are far from ultra-fitted, compressive aero cuts, tailored for pure performance on smooth road. The ML Hybrid Vest takes a much more functional approach, almost mountaineering in spirit: a fairly straight cut that leaves room for movement, for a second layer, or for a backpack. It is a confident choice, which reflects Mammut’s wish to carry its outdoor clothing codes over to cycling use. And that is where the positioning becomes interesting: we are not in purely cycling aesthetics. We are in use.

This vest will not suit those looking for a skin-tight garment, ready to scrape off watts or minimise aerodynamic drag. It is aimed at another tribe: touring cyclists, committed gravel riders, or simply everyday bike users, in varied and sometimes unpredictable contexts. It is a piece made for mixed routes, changing conditions, hybrid practices.
A textile construction with several gears
Under its sober looks, the ML Hybrid Vest hides a textile architecture of real complexity, where each material is selected to meet a precise function:
• On the chest, it is Pertex® Quantum Air that plays the breathable shield. This light, windproof and water-repellent fabric effectively protects from cold draughts, while letting moisture escape during effort.
• Inside, there is a layer of Polartec® Alpha® active insulation, designed to regulate body heat. Unlike classic quilted vests, this technology does not cause overheating. It insulates, but adapts.
• On the back, an ultra-breathable stretch panel provides natural ventilation. It is the vest’s “thermal chimney”, which prevents any build-up of heat and sweat, even on an intense climb or under a backpack.
• Finally, the two-way YKK zip lets you adjust ventilation in real time: you open from the bottom to let air circulate without exposing the chest — a detail that seems trivial, but makes a real difference in use.
Result: an extremely well-balanced vest that protects without enclosing, that insulates without suffocating. And which above all remains usable in very varied contexts, from the Alpine col to the urban alley via the forest singletrack.

A sober, almost chameleon look
Where Assos has always excelled is in the art of technical minimalism. The ML Hybrid Vest is no exception: no ostentatious branding, no flashy styling. The finishes are precise, the high collar perfectly cut, and the laser-cut seams give the garment great refinement.
But this time, the Mammut touch is felt as well. The vest does not just look like cycling clothing. It evokes more a technical fast-hiking vest, or a premium urban garment, that you might pull on for a weekend in the mountains or a ride around town.
And if we had to make a single criticism on the design side: the red currently offered is divisive. Too bright for some, a bit too “sporty” for others. A more neutral colour — black, olive, slate — would have strengthened the model’s urban versatility. But that is a matter of taste, and this kind of collaboration evolves quickly: other colours will surely follow.

One vest, several contexts
What impresses most in use is how fluidly the ML Hybrid Vest adapts. You take it out early in the morning, when the air is still biting. You keep it on the climb, because it evacuates heat well. You forget it on the descent, because it protects without flapping. And you end up keeping it on after getting off the bike, for a coffee or shopping, because it fits so well.
It is not limited to cycling use. It is a piece for active life. A garment you slip into your bag without thinking, because you know it can be useful in a thousand contexts:
- Commute to work at dawn
- Gravel ride in the mountains
- Quick hike with friends
- Getaway by train or van
- Urban café terrace, without denying your style
At €200, is it a good investment?
The price, yes, can make you wince. We are talking about €200 for a sleeveless vest. But if you judge it only through the grid of “that’s expensive for a windbreaker”, you miss its real value.
It is neither an emergency windbreaker nor a light down jacket. It is a premium product, built with cutting-edge technical materials, made to last, optimised for a multitude of uses, and able to replace several less effective layers. At this level of performance, durability and versatility, the price quickly becomes rational. You are not buying an accessory. You are investing in a central piece of your year-round kit.

The vest for the sporty everyday
This ML Hybrid Vest pulls off a rare feat in the highly segmented world of outdoor and cycling: it links several worlds without ever betraying any. It will suit those who ride for a long time, early, late, sometimes fast, sometimes slowly. Those who carry a bag, who venture onto trails, who want a garment as useful as it is good-looking.
It is not the vest of those aiming for KOMs. It is the vest of those who choose to live by bike, to share the tarmac with the earth, and to draw their own line between road and trail.
