Denis Dugouchet, Builder of Roads and Dreams: A Champion Master Builder of the 2025 Masters

The French Masters Championship, scheduled from July 18 to 20 in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte (Manche), will bear a unique signature: the mark of its organizer, Denis Dugouchet. A former elite racer, European Master champion, and renowned mechanic in Herblay… Denis is the very embodiment of cycling passion — not only on the saddle, but in the heart of the cycling fabric. And this time, he’s charting the course.

What still drives the racer

At 57, Denis is still driven by the same flame as in his early days: “The passion for cycling, and I like to give back what this sport has given me.” Competition is no longer the sole horizon; it has become a lever: to transmit, to unite, to give back what he has received. He admits it with the modesty of those who know what giving means: “Oh no! Unfortunately, I still have the desire, that’s the main thing.” And if today he no longer focuses so much on performance, this desire is more powerful than ever.

The man, the racer, the resilience

Between 1986 and 2000, Denis spent 14 years in the first category. His career was marked by victories, and also defeats. But everything was turned upside down in 2005: “victim of an accident…, 2 fractured vertebrae. I still have after-effects today, but passion is stronger than pain.” A radical truth: when you love, you get back up. After a period of inactivity, cycling was no longer just a sport, but an urgency, a landmark in personal reconstruction.

Denis doesn’t dwell on sadness: “The hardest moments, I’ve forgotten them.” His memory retains the positive: camaraderie, finish lines, shared moments. “My career itself, the encounters, the victories, the defeats: these are only good memories.” A man of emotional balance, who deliberately puts the past in perspective.

Giving victory to a friend is sometimes greater than taking it. Denis, natural class in Châteauroux in 1999.

Mechanic in Herblay: the other side of passion

Having arrived in Herblay almost by chance, he is now part of the “Matériel Vélo” family: “Today I enjoy being part of this family.” Every week, after working on bikes, he hits the road: “a short ride at lunchtime with colleagues, 41 km. We only have one circuit.” But in winter, he rides at the Saint-Quentin velodrome and feeds on the pure gesture.

Mechanics? It’s not an artifice: it trained him to know his bike, and especially his body: “Today, if I prepare for an objective, I am capable of doing the ‘JOB’ like a young beginner.” But for him, technique remains a bridge to self-knowledge and machine knowledge — and a service to those who ride today: “I see that many prioritize aesthetics over efficiency. Me, I’m a mechanic who knows a bit about the subject.” This honesty is his trademark: neither show-off, nor precious posture; just the commitment of the humble enthusiast.

La Manche, its roots, its roads

Denis is Norman through and through, and proud of it: “These are my roots. With cycling, I moved around a lot but I came back.” He loves La Manche, its landscapes, its discreet climbs, its roads that he knows by heart: “My beginnings… I’ve known the roads quite well for a long time.” In winter, a pedal stroke towards the Alpine reliefs, in summer, a return home: “When I see Thierry Marie or Anthony Delaplace, I believe it: you can be performant while remaining deeply local.”

When Jalabert came to challenge Denis Dugouchet on the roads of La Manche… The Spanish-speaking pro against the rooted local. Two worlds, one same respect.

He upholds a principle: “Go for it, have no regrets.” Even if it means embarking on professional back-and-forths, his heart in two places, he doesn’t look at the distance; he looks at the objective.

Organization: building a legacy

The 2025 French Masters Championship is no accident: present in 2022, during the championships in Crocq, Denis initiated the project: “During the 2022 championships in Crocq, I spoke with Jean-Michel Richeffort… that’s how it started.” A discreet, but decisive click.

Two years later, the irresistible desire to highlight La Manche takes shape: “Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, because it’s a beautiful place.” Since then, it’s been a painstaking effort: “many appointments, meetings, phone calls.” He doesn’t elaborate on the role, but specifies: “this project is my idea, but I surrounded myself with the best team”, with the municipality, the clubs, the company Lemardele Sport Organisation.

Before organizing it, he lived it. Before bringing people together, he won it. This jersey, this emotion, this place: perhaps it was ultimately here that the idea germinated.

The most important thing: the sense of celebration: “I want the competitors to be happy, for it to be a cycling festival all week long.” This championship is not just a sporting challenge: it’s a communion, a moment of shared life: “It’s very special, Masters championships are often reunions between old friends…”

Challenges, ambitions, lasting traces

The challenges are significant: finding budget, volunteers, political commitment… But when Denis knocks on the town hall door, the answer comes quickly: “Mr. Briens told me ‘but you shouldn’t look elsewhere.’” A rare and motivating sign of confidence.

The objective? To remain in people’s memories: “I would like everyone to remember it.” Through a united community: Espoir Bike Team, La Roulibre Saint-Sauveuraise, local clubs — all united: “I launched an appeal to all surrounding clubs, some are responding.” This is the meaning of his approach: more than a championship, it’s a gathering of the region’s vital forces.

Around the table, much more than a sports project: a territory in motion. Dugouchet, the discreet driving force behind a unifying momentum.

Today’s cycling: clear-sighted and demanding

Denis observes a sport in transition: “An elite that is professionalizing, and a widening gap behind it. A fragmented calendar, fewer and fewer racers.” He perceives its fragility: “In 1991, at ASPTT Paris, we were 27 first category. Today, there are 15 elites in Île-de-France, all in the same club.” Traditional races have faded. But there is hope: “Masters are very good, but we are not the future of cycling.” A warning cry: youth, clubs, local events — everything needs to be strengthened.

Every racer, every volunteer has their place: “It’s a shame, we need you as much as you need us.” In this perspective, Denis builds a philosophy of sport: objective? to set high goals, dare to fail, and always love. “I like to set the bar very high… what do I risk? Not succeeding, no big deal, I will have tried.” A state of mind, a lesson.

When the human endeavor becomes the challenge

By deciding not to compete in this edition, but to dedicate all his energy to it, Denis seals a clear message: cycling is also this ability to conceive a project, to build it, to make it live. “It’s my idea, but I surrounded myself with the best team.” For him, performance is not limited to effort or watts; it is collective, organic, sustainable.

He calls on other regions: “Above all, I would like it to inspire others to do better.” The message is launched: a championship, a town, people — a whole that transcends the individual. “I hope that my racer profile has helped me better understand what participants expect.” Behind the logistics, there is the inner velocity of the athlete.

He could have competed in the race. He preferred to organize it. But on a bike as in a project, Denis always remains on the attack.

The man of two shores, the bridge between generations

Denis embodies a transition. Between yesterday’s elite, today’s pro amateur, and the youth of tomorrow. He is on two shores — Herblay and La Manche — and builds a symbolic bridge. He didn’t choose the easy path: organizing doesn’t bring glory or bonuses. So why? Because he believes in it, simply. “I love my region very much, but I also love the mountains.” He says what he does, without pretense.

The championship he organizes is a testament: above performance, there is humanity. Passion never dies, it changes, it translates into actions, into commitment.

A story that charts its own course

At the end of these three days of racing, if there is only one memory Denis wishes to leave, it is that of celebration, recognition, and transmission. This championship will not only be measured by the clock, but by the joy of reunions, collective efforts, roads charted by the strength of arms, ideas — and dreams.

And what if this 2025 French Masters Championship in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte turned out to be more than a race? What if it became the symbol that cycling is a sport of sharing, surpassing oneself, of rootedness, carried by men like Denis Dugouchet: road builder, master of his ambitions, guardian of cycling passion.

When an idea becomes reality… and it passes from hand to hand.

More than a racer, a transmitter

Denis Dugouchet doesn’t just organize a championship; he writes a human epic. That of a man who, by folding up the pump in his workshop, gets back on his bike to chart a collective future. He shows that one can be a champion, craftsman, organizer, builder — often at the same time. And that every road, whether asphalted or imagined, always begins with a dream. A slightly crazy dream? Yes, but passionate. And that’s why, from July 18 to 20, we will follow his tracks — and the ramifications they will have drawn — with admiration and emotion.
