Willy Voet, team masseur for the Festina team, one of the most prestigious in the peloton, was arrested with an arsenal of doping products. This arrest revealed an organized doping system within the team, leading to its immediate exclusion from the Tour. In Saint-Priest-de-Gimel, in the back room of a country café, the organizers desperately tried to contain the crisis in front of revolted riders and cameras from around the world. But chaos was inevitable.
A few kilometers away, the Château de Bity, owned by the Chiracs, symbolized the presidential couple’s ambition to offer Corrèze an international showcase thanks to the Tour. Instead of the hoped-for celebration, the region became the scene of a crisis that shook professional sport.

In the background, the tense cohabitation between Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, and Lionel Jospin’s government added a political dimension to the affair. The Minister of Sports, Marie-George Buffet, seized the opportunity to intensify the anti-doping fight, laying the groundwork for the creation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This scandal was not limited to cycling: it questioned the values of sport and highlighted the excesses of a system under pressure.
