Aerodynamics has always been at the heart of helmet design at MET. From its beginnings, with the pioneering concept of using the helmet to guide airflow beyond the shoulders, MET has constantly advanced innovation. Today the brand presents the new Drone Wide Body II time trial helmet, developed in “The Tube”, MET’s new advanced technological wind tunnel, built in-house at its headquarters in Italy.

“The Tube”, a unique facility
Specifically designed for aerodynamic and thermal analysis in cycling, the wind tunnel developed with MET is a state-of-the-art facility for testing helmets, bikes, riding positions, and all aerodynamic equipment.
A dedicated facility
“The Tube” is a custom-built, circular wind tunnel optimized for testing cycling equipment. Completed in 2024, it is now fully operational.

Prototype development
During the development phase of a new high-performance helmet, testing different shapes and configurations is essential to find the perfect balance for various cyclist body types and positions. Thanks to in-house 3D printers, MET can evaluate several solutions in “The Tube” and refine the design.
Versatile wind tunnel
“The Tube” features a dual configuration, allowing for a switch from a test with a dummy head only to a test with the bike and rider, enabling multiple testing scenarios. This allows for evaluating not only the helmet’s shape but also its interaction with the cyclist, i.e., the system as a whole.

Thermal analysis
“The Tube” is equipped with a dummy head integrating thermal sensors across its entire crown. The dummy head is heated to 38 °C, simulating body temperature under exertion. MET measures the temperature drop over time: the faster it is, the more efficient the internal air channeling.
Athletes
“The Tube” is open to MET’s partner riders and teams, allowing work on both products and rider position. As a partner to these athletes, MET welcomes its athletes to the MET wind tunnel and supports them in developing a complete aerodynamic package to gain a competitive advantage at all levels.

Comprehensive helmet development center
“The Tube” is the latest addition to MET’s Italian headquarters in Talamona, completing what is now the world’s most advanced helmet development center. It includes a crash-test lab, virtual analysis, 3D prototyping, and now an aerodynamic and thermal wind tunnel.
Key info on “The Tube”
• Location: MET headquarters, Talamona, Italy
• Wind tunnel type: circular, with controlled temperature and air density
• Wind speed: up to 100 km/h
• Tests: aerodynamic trials and thermal analyses
• Yaw angle test: adjustable rotation platform from 0° to 30°
• Dual configuration: cyclist and dummy head configurations
The Drone Wide Body II, the fastest just got faster
The Drone Wide Body II is the second generation of the helmet that has won numerous World Tour Time Trials and Ironman World Championships.

Improved performance
A new rear design, developed in the in-house wind tunnel, allows the new Drone II to be 13.5 seconds faster over a 40 km Time Trial than the previous version. This linear rear design enables a lower head position during effort.
Proven wide design
The unique wide design of the MET Drone channels airflow over the shoulders, significantly reducing turbulence and drag. This translates into valuable energy savings and an aerodynamic advantage for the cyclist.

Weight and ventilation
Low-drag air inlets are strategically positioned to reduce turbulence and work with an internal air channeling system to improve ventilation and comfort. At 430 g, it is among the lightest long tail helmets on the market, offering superior comfort for long-distance Ironman events.
