Kask Nirvana Helmet Review: For Rouleurs and Triathletes

Aerodynamics for Performance

The Kask Nirvana helmet stands out as a benchmark for road cyclists and triathletes seeking optimal performance. Designed to combine advanced aerodynamics and excellent ventilation, this high-end model, notably worn by the professional Ineos Grenadiers team, proves to be very comfortable in use, even if its look is surprising at first glance.

An aero helmet that leaves no one indifferent.

The Kask Nirvana is a concentrate of innovations, designed to minimize air resistance while ensuring high thermal comfort. Developed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, this helmet boasts impressive performance: a 35% reduction in aerodynamic drag and a 19% increase in ventilation compared to the best aerodynamic helmets in its category, according to the brand. These figures, obtained through wind tunnel tests, demonstrate Kask’s expertise in optimizing airflow.

The shapes and volumes of the Kask Nirvana have been studied to optimize airflow around the head during effort.

Main features:

  • Weight: 272 g in size M, placing it among the lightest aerodynamic helmets on the market.
  • Multipod System: a 3D-printed internal padding, with isotropic behavior, which improves the management of linear and rotational impacts while promoting ventilation thanks to direct air circulation in contact with the head.
  • OCTOFIT+ Adjustment: this occipital retention system, equipped with an over-injected rubber dial, offers precise micrometric adjustment for increased stability and comfort, even for cyclists with long hair.
  • Ventilation: optimized internal channels ensure effective thermoregulation, particularly at the front and top of the skull, making the Nirvana exceptional for an aerodynamic helmet.
  • Merino wool padding: positioned on the front and sides, this natural material improves comfort and sweat absorption.
  • Other features: a hypoallergenic faux leather strap, a sunglass port at the front, and a reflective insert at the rear for better visibility.
  • Safety: the Nirvana integrates the Kask Rotational Impact WG11 Test protocol, exceeding international standards for optimal protection against rotational impacts.
  • Available in only two sizes (M: 52-58 cm, L: 59-62 cm) and several colors (Matte White, Matte Black, Cherry, Ultraviolet), the Nirvana is sold at a price of 360 €, a price justified by its high-end positioning.
The top of the ears slides inside the helmet.

The Nirvana’s design also stands out for its fluid lines and side parts covering the top of the ears, a particularity aimed at optimizing airflow and reinforcing its aero efficiency. With these characteristics, Kask promises a helmet capable of combining speed, breathability, and safety, without compromise.

Kask Nirvana Test: A Helmet Built for Performance

After several weeks of use in varied conditions, the Kask Nirvana reveals its strengths and limitations. At 272 g in size M, the Nirvana is remarkably light for an aerodynamic helmet. Once on the head, it is practically forgotten, even during long rides. This lightness, combined with perfect balance, provides a rare sense of freedom for such a technical helmet. You almost check that it’s still there, it’s so discreet.

The occipital adjustment system is height-adjustable…
… Which allows the Nirvana to be easily adapted to different head shapes.

The OCTOFIT+ system is a success. The rubber dial offers an excellent grip, and the micrometric adjustment allows the helmet to be adjusted to the millimeter. Whether for a quick adjustment before a ride or for an on-the-go adjustment, this system guarantees great stability, even on rough roads or during sprints. Cyclists with long hair will appreciate the redesigned vertical stabilizer, which prevents any discomfort. But above all, this height-adjustable system at the back of the head offers truly custom positioning, regardless of skull shape.

The Nirvana’s ventilation is one of its strong points, but it depends heavily on speed. Above 30 km/h, the internal channels impressively channel air, maintaining a feeling of freshness at the front and top of the skull. Real-world tests confirm the 19% improvement announced by Kask. However, at low speeds, such as during slow climbs or in urban conditions, ventilation becomes more limited. Air circulates less efficiently, and a slight sensation of heat is felt, although this remains acceptable for an aerodynamic helmet.

The Multipod padding is very comfortable to use, but it also has safety benefits, limiting the consequences of a rotational impact.

The 3D-printed Multipod padding is a true innovation. This isotropic material perfectly conforms to the shape of the head, distributing pressure points evenly. Comfort is enhanced by the merino wool inserts, soft against the skin and pleasant even after several hours. This 3D system also offers additional ventilation, with air circulating directly in contact with the scalp, which accentuates the feeling of freshness at high speeds.

The merino wool front part is soft and pleasant to the touch, but not enough to retain sweat on very hot days.

Despite its qualities, the Nirvana shows a limitation in hot weather. In summer conditions, with temperatures exceeding 25 °C, sweat tends to accumulate on the forehead. Although the merino wool padding effectively absorbs moisture, it does not completely prevent sweat drops from running, especially during prolonged efforts at low speeds. This phenomenon, common on aerodynamic helmets, is nevertheless less pronounced than on less ventilated competing models.

A Look That Divides Opinion

The Nirvana’s design, surprising with its side parts covering the top of the ears, effectively streamlines airflow and reduces turbulence, as observed during intense rides. When putting on the helmet for the first time, one must get used to tucking the upper part of the ears inside the helmet, but one adapts to it quite quickly.

The sunglass port is practical and well integrated, while the reflective insert at the rear enhances safety in low light conditions. The faux leather strap, true to Kask’s aesthetic, is comfortable and durable, even after prolonged exposure to sweat.

The reflective rear strip is a plus for safety.

We regret, however, that the Nirvana is only available in two sizes. According to Kask, the design of a smaller helmet (in S) could not meet the engineers’ requirements in terms of volume to optimize airflow. Size M, normally intended for head circumferences from 52 to 58 cm, proved too large for someone who normally wears an S. However, for a cyclist who wears M helmets, comfort and style are definitely there.

An Exceptional Helmet

The Kask Nirvana is an exceptional helmet, designed for cyclists and triathletes who prioritize performance. At 360 €, the Nirvana is aimed at a demanding public, ready to invest in high-end equipment. If you ride fast and are looking for a helmet that combines speed, comfort, and safety, the Kask Nirvana is a model to consider. For cyclists riding mostly at low speeds or in very hot conditions, a more ventilated model might be preferred.
