The cycling world mourns today the passing of Stéphane Krafft, former professional rider for Cofidis, who suffered a fatal heart attack during the Tour of Flanders cyclo. An immense talent has passed away, a rider who, despite exceptional natural abilities, never fully managed to conform to the demands of high-level sport.

Born in 1979, Stéphane Krafft started cycling at PAC95, where his talent quickly shone through. From his U23 years, he excelled: a stage victory at the Tour du Loir-et-Cher, a second place at Paris-Roubaix U23 in 1999… He had that panache, that inner fire that distinguishes champions from others. But when the time came to turn professional with the prestigious Cofidis team in 2000, the young rider faced another challenge: the relentless rigor of the elite level.
Professional cycling is a cold and demanding machine, where talent alone is not enough. It requires iron discipline, an impeccable lifestyle, and the ability to suffer day after day in the anonymity of long training hours. Stéphane, however, was never one to confine himself to a meticulously planned routine. He loved cycling for the freedom it offered, for the pure sensation of speed, for the adrenaline of great battles. Not for the constant sacrifices demanded by the highest level.

A destiny marked by passion
After two seasons with Cofidis, his professional cycling career came to an end. But Stéphane never truly left cycling. He continued to ride a little for pleasure, to get excited watching the sport on TV that had always animated him. And more recently, like so many former riders, he found in cyclosportives a new arena for expression, a place to reconnect with that raw passion, without the constraints of the pro world.
It was at one of these events, the Tour of Flanders cyclo, that he died this weekend. A tragic end, fitting his journey: on a bike, in full effort, on the mythical roads of cycling.
A final tribute
Stéphane Krafft was a unique rider. He embodied those pure talents, those rough diamonds that shine intensely but sometimes refuse to be cut. His story is that of a man who deeply loved cycling, but who never wanted to be confined by its demands.
Today, the cycling world loses one of its sons. A rider who may not have made the record books at the highest level, but who left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path.
Farewell Stéphane. May the Flemish cobbles resonate one last time under your wheel.
