Cyrille Patoux opened his door to share with us more than just a career: a true lesson in passion and perseverance. From his cadet years to today, he embodies what is most authentic in cycling: the love of the sport, respect for effort, and remarkable consistency. His story is that of a rider who has never stopped moving forward, with humility and determination.

At nearly 40 years old, Cyrille Patoux continues to race at the highest amateur level.

In a sport where the careers of amateur riders are often fleeting, where many hang up their wheels at the first sign of disillusionment, Cyrille Patoux stands out as an exception. At 40, he is still there, at the highest amateur level, ready to battle it out, to showcase his race craft, his talent, and his experience.

“First and foremost, it’s passion that motivates me. I love my sport, and sometimes it rewards me well, sometimes not at all, but that’s what I love.” A sentence that sums it all up. Cyrille is not just a rider; he lives and breathes cycling, always has.

Extraordinary Longevity

Twenty seasons at the highest amateur level is not something you improvise. It’s a matter of passion, certainly, but also of discipline and mental strength. “I’m a championship rider and a one-day racer. I like to rise to the challenge on those days when anything is possible.”

His ability to excel on big occasions, his race knowledge, and his steely resolve allow him to remain competitive against much younger riders.

He could have stopped everything, like so many others, in the face of setbacks and disillusionment. “Yes, especially when you get thrashed, and when I had back pain like last year, I had no pleasure at all and that put me off, but otherwise, I quickly move on. Mental strength plays a big part.”

There is a form of wisdom in this answer, a detachment that allows him to always bounce back.

Cyrille Patoux remains competitive, even when facing riders who are sometimes half his age.

The Story of a Pillar of Amateur Cycling

While his time as a pro was short, he remains convinced that everything could have been different. “My biggest regret in my career will primarily be my very short time as a pro. If I had been French champion, I think it would have changed the game, because AG2R and Cofidis were interested. Even if my season with Roubaix was far from ridiculous, eighth at Plumelec and my two top-five finishes at Bessèges behind Bryan Coquard, and other honorable finishes…”

His talent was there, his potential too, but opportunities didn’t always materialize.

What he remembers most are the memorable moments. “10th in the Poly Normande with the French national team in 2012. And then French amateur vice-champion in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux in 2012, also one of my best seasons.”

He didn’t race for glory, but for the pleasure of fighting, of pushing his limits. And he has never stopped evolving: “I love challenges. When an area of cycling appeals to me, I invest myself fully to see if I’m good at it.”

He also excels in cyclo-cross, a discipline where he won the French Masters champion title this winter.

A Balance Between Cycling, Family, and Work

If Cyrille is still here, it’s also thanks to his support network. “They are there every weekend with me, my partner of 17 years and the children. As soon as they were born, from their first month, they were already at a bike race, and that’s my strength. My wife is my assistant, my mental coach, my Sports Director, and my mechanic.”

He is not just a man of cycling; he is a family man, aware that this stability allows him to continue his career.

He juggles his professional life and the high level of competition. “I have a job that makes me leave early in the morning and get back around 3:30 PM. That leaves me a little time to train and my Wednesday afternoons. Of course, I ride less during the week than before, but that doesn’t stop me from performing.”

Where many slow down, where professional and family life take over, he continues to forge his path with the same desire.

Cyrille Patoux’s family is very present by his side.

An Enlightened Perspective on Cycling

With two decades in the sport, Cyrille has seen cycling evolve. “Disc brakes and electronic shifting, that’s what has changed the most.”

And about the riders he’s encountered? “I don’t necessarily have riders who impressed me; I’ve seen so many come and go… I’d say Samuel Plouhinec as an amateur.” A humble answer, which shows his respect for his opponents.

And the end of his career? He doesn’t see it yet. “As long as my body and desire remain, I’ll continue.” He knows that day will come, but for now, he is still there, ready to advise the younger generation. “I always like to give advice to the guys on the team or others in the peloton, to help them develop as much as possible and share my knowledge with them.”

He wants to transmit, to share everything cycling has taught him.

One Last Victory?

He still has dreams, objectives. “A French Cup or a major classic.” He knows time is against him, but he gives up nothing.

And if he had to summarize his story with cycling in one sentence? “The world of cycling is a second family.”

That’s why he’s still here. Because Cyrille Patoux is more than a rider; he’s a passionate individual, a man of cycling, a pillar of this sport. He never sought the limelight; he simply followed his own path. And that’s what makes him a unique champion.
