Review of the San Marco SHORTFIT 2.0 3D Open-Fit Racing Narrow Saddle

At 3bikes, we know just how much the choice of a saddle can turn a bike ride into a memorable experience—or, on the contrary, into an uncomfortable ordeal. The challenge is simple: how do you balance performance, comfort, and technological innovation to provide cyclists with a saddle that supports their efforts over long distances? To answer this question, we tested the new San Marco SHORTFIT 2.0 3D Open-Fit Racing Narrow saddle. After about 500 km of testing on our road bike—a Colnago V4RS (mentioned briefly to provide context) equipped with the latest Shimano Ultegra Di2 and Shimano Dura-Ace C60 wheelset—here’s our verdict.

The SHORTFIT 2.0 3D’s modern, streamlined design immediately captivates with its bold lines. Designed using 3D printing technology via the DLS (Digital Light Synthesis) process, the saddle features a structure with varying densities. This innovative approach allows for intelligent pressure distribution: the surface adapts to the contours of the pelvis, ensuring a stable seat that’s optimized for power transfer.

The Open-Fit cutout at the centre of the saddle is undoubtedly its most striking feature. Thanks to a generous central cutout, the perineal area is relieved of any excessive compression—a real advantage for preventing discomfort on long rides. Over the course of our 500 km ride, we particularly appreciated this feature, which transformed what are usually grueling stretches into moments of smooth riding and comfort.

Riding Experience and Feel

From the very first kilometers, the saddle stood out for its comfort. The compact dimensions—140 mm wide and 255 mm long (we specifically requested this size from the manufacturer, as it’s also available at 155 mm wide)—are shaped to match the body contours of riders with narrow sit bones.

Here’s why: this precise sizing allows for a firmer seat without compromising the flexibility needed for changing positions during races or on intense climbs. In short, it’s not based on objective data, but we prefer it this way! The fine distribution of micro-densities across the entire surface ensures optimal power transfer. Each pedal stroke is so fluid that it feels like a natural extension of the body. The saddle’s ergonomics are particularly well-suited for prolonged efforts: the slightly angled sides provide harmonious support for the thighs, while maintaining the freedom of movement essential during periods of intense effort.

However, despite these qualities, we’ve identified two areas for improvement. First, even though the cushioning technology is ingenious, we still feel some vibrations on very uneven roads. Even more effective shock absorption under these conditions would make for a more comfortable ride.

Second, although the saddle suits most cyclists, it would be helpful to have more adjustment options to accommodate different body types. For example, being able to adjust the angle of the seat plate would allow you to position the central opening exactly where it needs to be relative to the shape of your pelvis.

Furthermore, offering the option to adjust the firmness of the padding in certain areas—making it softer or firmer as needed—would allow everyone to achieve truly personalized comfort. These extra tweaks would cut down on pressure points and help you transfer power more efficiently through the pedals.

Overall Analysis and Solution to the Problem

After completing our 500 km test, we can confirm that the new San Marco SHORTFIT 2.0 3D Open-Fit Racing Narrow saddle brilliantly addresses the initial challenge: offering the perfect balance between performance, comfort, and innovation. The 3D-printed structure distributes pressure for a stable, responsive perch that supports the rider throughout the ride.

The innovative central cutout significantly reduces pressure points, transforming long rides into moments of pleasure, free from the usual discomforts.

Our time on the road has convinced us that this saddle is much more than just an accessory. It embodies the future of cycling gear, where cutting-edge technology is harnessed to enhance ergonomics and deliver improved performance without compromising comfort.

Admittedly, there is still room for improvement, particularly regarding the packaging, which, for a product of this caliber, would have deserved a more refined and personalized presentation. Similarly, more advanced adjustment options could further optimize the experience for cyclists with very specific needs.

Despite room for improvement in the packaging, the innovation and technical quality of this saddle make it a wise choice

Conclusion: Innovation in the Service of the Cyclist

In conclusion, the new San Marco SHORTFIT 2.0 3D Open-Fit Racing Narrow saddle is a compelling answer to our quest for gear that combines cutting-edge technology with absolute comfort. We’re convinced that this saddle will appeal to cyclists who, like us, seek to push their limits while ensuring their comfort while riding.
