In a rapidly changing landscape, consumers are increasingly turning to second-hand goods, and bicycles are no exception. The reasons are numerous, the most cited being related to environmental or budgetary concerns. Younger generations seem to be the most inclined to embrace this consumption mode, as over 40% of Gen Z and millennials regularly buy from the second-hand market.
A trend confirmed on the buycycle platform, which recorded a 4x annual growth between 2023 and 2024. With over 30,000 bikes sold and over 3 million unique visitors per month, buycycle is focusing at the beginning of this year on its users’ habits to deliver key figures for the second-hand bike market.
Among the findings of the report, the following points can be highlighted:
- Buying a used bike saves 174 kg of CO2 emissions per bike.
- Trek, Cannondale, and Bianchi brands showed the smallest difference between new and used prices, reflecting their strong resale value and continued demand in the second-hand market.
- Electric bikes also have their place in the second-hand market, with a 15.38% growth on buycycle between 2023 and 2024. It should be noted that on the platform, the average selling price of an electric bike is €3,130.
- Triathlon is on the rise, as sales of triathlon bikes have tripled between 2023 and 2024.
- Performance-oriented cyclists also buy used, as 70% of bikes sold in 2024 on buycycle were carbon. 43% of them were equipped with a mechanical groupset (+ 27% electronic).
