A call for everyone’s responsibility

This murder once again highlights the urgent need to strengthen cohabitation among all road users and to protect cyclists. The preliminary investigation indicates that the cyclist was riding under normal conditions, respecting the highway code. This new tragedy adds to an overly long list of accidents and intentional violence against cyclists, and raises many questions about road safety in France.

Enough of the road carnage!

For too many years, the French Cycling Tourism Federation and “Mon vélo est une vie” have been calling on public authorities to take action, but their calls have gone unanswered. Yet, they are asking for:

  • Consideration of a real-life cycling situation for future drivers and for middle school students in the content of the School Road Safety Certificate (ASSR);
  • Regulatory measures to facilitate bicycle use and understanding by motorized users through:
  • Explicit road signs regarding cyclist traffic;
  • A reduction in the authorized speed on certain roads;
  • Uniform recognition of cycle paths by specific colors;
  • Clear rules on priorities for vulnerable users.

The road delinquency we are witnessing goes against the development of cycling desired by the State and endangers the learning of cycling for young people within the framework of “Savoir rouler à vélo” (Knowing how to ride a bike), in our French Cycling Schools, and for adults getting back in the saddle.

The French Cycling Tourism Federation and the “Mon vélo est une vie” association reiterate their call for a Grenelle (national consultation) on safety for cyclists to bring all road stakeholders around a table and discuss concrete measures.
