Gérard Briand, the big-hearted photographer who elevates cycling

In the world of amateur cycling, there are familiar faces that can be found at every race, on the sidelines and far from the frenzy of the peloton. Gérard Briand is one of these discreet observers, the eye behind the lens, the man whose passion for sport and photography has forged a unique bond with riders and fans. This former cyclist, who rode for more than twenty years before putting his bike away, discovered a new, equally intense vocation: capturing the effort, the emotion, and above all, the humanity of this sport that has always fascinated him. We met him for 3bikes.fr…

What sets Gérard Briand apart is not simply his talent behind the camera. It’s his altruism. Where some photographers make a living from selling their shots, Gérard offers his images. A selfless gesture, almost natural for him, but deeply touching for those who benefit from it. Amateur cyclists, often deprived of media attention, find in his shots precious memories, testimonies of a day of effort etched forever.

Gérard Briand, a former rider, rediscovered his passion for cycling by attending numerous amateur events to photograph race moments.

The return to a forgotten passion

Gérard Briand’s journey is that of a man who, after turning the page on cycling, found his way back to his passion almost by chance. It was by stumbling upon a website dedicated to cycling, Velo-Web, that he rediscovered his love for the sport. Internet users shared photos of races there, and something resonated with him. “It made me want to do the same,” he recounts simply. Gérard then embarked on a new adventure, camera in hand, reconnecting with the cycling world from a new angle.

He quickly established himself as a key figure in regional races, particularly in Vendée, his chosen land. There, local races like the Circuit des Plages Vendéennes became popular events for this retiree who found in observing sporting effort a new way of living his passion for cycling. “The pleasure is to attend the races, and above all, to please the riders,” he confides, as if one and the other went hand in hand.

The famous finish line photo captures the maximum of emotions.

Generosity above all

What makes Gérard so special is this outpouring of heart, this desire to share his photos without ever expecting anything in return. His shots are freely distributed to riders, teams, and enthusiasts. And even if, modestly, he doesn’t explicitly say it, this generosity makes him a unique person in the often competitive world of sport. “The feedback from cyclists is what I like most,” he says, with that smile that one can guess behind his words.

Gérard doesn’t seek recognition, but it comes nonetheless, from the riders themselves, who acknowledge his presence, his shots, and sometimes offer him amusing anecdotes. “Some see me and give me a little sign, or stick out their tongue,” he laughs, proving that a relationship has been forged over the course of races, in the shadow of his lens.

An authentic gaze

What is striking in Gérard Briand’s work is his ability to capture moments of truth. For him, the photo not to be missed is that of the finish. That’s where everything is decided, where emotions are strongest, faces marked by effort or the joy of victory. Yet, he doesn’t limit himself to the big moments. Through his photographer’s eye, he also immortalizes the silent efforts, the more intimate moments of a race that only an attentive observer can capture.

Some offbeat shots perfectly convey the atmosphere around a cycling race.

Over time, he has perfected his technique. “I’ve improved over the years, and I’ve invested in increasingly powerful equipment,” he explains humbly. Yet, it’s his innate sense of the perfect moment that makes all the difference. Gérard knows where to position himself, often according to the sunlight, to capture the very essence of the effort.

A privileged observer

Through his work, Gérard Briand has become a privileged witness to amateur cycling, a world often far from the national media spotlight. He immortalizes local races, but these races, for those who participate in them, are just as important as major competitions. “The recognition of the riders is what matters most,” he admits. Thanks to his photos, they have memories for later, images that tell their own story.

Regional cycling thrives on its participants and the witnesses of their efforts.

What we take away from our meeting with this highly generous individual is that Gérard has no ambition to cover the Tour de France. He finds his happiness in the proximity of regional races, where the authenticity and simplicity of cycling are fully expressed. It is in the heart of these moments of truth, far from the big media scenes, that he finds his satisfaction. His greatest wish? That his photos continue to touch, to immortalize the effort, the joy, and sometimes the suffering, to offer them to those who are the true heroes. More than images, Gérard captures invaluable memories, silent witnesses to the passion and commitment that drive every rider.
