Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has gained popularity in the cycling world due to its many benefits. Used to stimulate muscles with electrical impulses, EMS activates a greater proportion of muscle fibers compared to conventional training, thereby increasing strength and endurance. It is particularly useful for cyclists looking to maximize their performance without significantly increasing their training load. In addition, EMS helps improve recovery by reducing muscle fatigue and accelerating tissue repair after intense sessions. It offers an effective solution for those who want to supplement their training routine, optimize their recovery time, and reduce the risk of injury.

Let’s move on to the test…

The Integral-EMS Shorts we tested stand out for their ergonomic and lightweight design, crucial characteristics for any equipment intended for demanding athletes like cyclists. Designed with high-quality materials, they ensure both durability and comfort, essential for prolonged sessions. These innovative shorts are equipped with 10 electrostimulation pads strategically placed on the thighs, glutes, and abdominals, allowing for targeted and effective stimulation of the main muscle groups used in cycling.

The Integral EMS shorts are easy to wear and use.

One of the major innovations of this product lies in its wireless operation, which eliminates cable constraints and significantly improves freedom of movement. This feature is particularly valuable for cyclists who want to integrate EMS into their outdoor training without feeling hindered. In addition, the Integral-EMS Shorts are controlled via a dedicated mobile application, which is simple and intuitive. This application allows you to adjust the intensity of the electrical impulses for each pad individually, offering advanced training customization. Users can adapt the stimulation levels according to their specific needs, whether they are in a recovery phase or intensive muscle strengthening.

In short, the ergonomic design, lightness, quality of materials, and wireless operation of the Integral-EMS Shorts make them a tool particularly well-suited to the demands of cyclists, allowing them to optimize their performance and recovery without sacrificing comfort or mobility.

Ease of Use

The dedicated mobile application for the Integral-EMS Shorts is intuitive and easy to use, which is a real asset for users of all levels, from novices to seasoned athletes. As soon as the shorts are put on, the application quickly connects the device via Bluetooth, offering a user-friendly interface where each electrostimulation pad can be controlled individually.

The application allows you to adjust the intensity of each electrode individually.

This customization is essential to meet the specific needs of each user. Indeed, the ability to adjust the intensity of the electrical impulses of each pad from 0 to 100% allows for precise adaptation of the stimulation according to the targeted muscle groups and training objectives. For example, a cyclist wishing to strengthen their quadriceps can increase the intensity on the thigh pads, while another person might prefer to focus the effort on the abdominals or glutes.

The application also offers several predefined programs, adapted to different training phases, whether for warm-up, muscle strengthening, endurance, or recovery, named in the application as: VIP, Fitness, Cardio, Slimming, and Relaxation modes. Each program is designed to optimize the effectiveness of sessions and facilitate the integration of EMS into the daily training routine.

Programming training sessions is child’s play thanks to a well-designed application.

The clarity of the interface allows for quick and effortless adjustment, even in the middle of a session. Users can easily adjust parameters in real time to increase or decrease intensity according to their feelings. This responsiveness is particularly valuable during outdoor sessions, where conditions can vary and require instant adaptations.

Finally, the application keeps a history of training sessions, allowing users to track their progress over time. This personalized tracking helps evaluate the effectiveness of EMS and adjust programs based on the results obtained, thus contributing to continuous performance improvement.

The Integral-EMS Shorts mobile application combines ease of use, advanced customization, and detailed tracking, offering cyclists a powerful tool to optimize every aspect of their training.

Sensations and Effectiveness

From the first minutes of use, the electrical impulses of the Integral-EMS Shorts begin to intensely stimulate the targeted muscles. The sensation is both surprising and intriguing, though not uncomfortable. For this test, we followed a 20-minute program designed to simulate a muscle strengthening session. The impulses, adjusted according to our preferences via the mobile application, produced deep muscle activation, providing a unique sensation of continuous and controlled muscle contraction.

At the end of the session, we felt muscle fatigue comparable to that of a traditional workout lasting several hours. This rapid effectiveness is one of the great advantages of EMS, allowing for maximized benefits in a reduced time. Indeed, EMS engages up to 100% of muscle fibers, compared to only 30% during conventional exercises. This complete activation offers high muscle strengthening potential, theoretically capable of significantly improving users’ strength and endurance.

However, despite these promises, after a few sessions of use, we did not observe as significant an improvement in muscle tone in motion as we had hoped. Several factors can explain this mixed result. First, we tested the device at a time when our physical condition was already optimal, which might limit the perception of additional improvements. Second, the relatively short duration of the test may not fully reveal the long-term benefits of EMS.

As for the visible reduction in fat mass, particularly in the thighs and abdominals, the results were not as marked as expected. Fat loss is a complex process that depends on many factors, including nutrition and overall exercise, and it is possible that EMS alone may not be enough to produce visible changes in a short time. A test period in winter, when our physical condition is less optimal, could reveal different and potentially more conclusive results.

For a cyclist, the main interest lies in recovery programs.

In summary, although the Integral-EMS Shorts offer intense muscle stimulation and a feeling of fatigue comparable to traditional training, visible results in terms of muscle tone and fat mass reduction remain to be confirmed over a longer period of use and under more varied physical conditions.

Adaptability to Cycling Training

For cyclists, the Integral-EMS Shorts can be particularly beneficial, especially during intensive preparation periods. In addition to classic training sessions, they allow for maximized muscle gains by engaging fibers often little activated during conventional exercises. EMS can strengthen specific muscle groups essential for cycling, such as the quadriceps, hamstrings, and core muscles, thus contributing to better overall performance.

We also appreciated the possibility of using EMS in motion thanks to the wireless device. Until now, we were used to using COMPEX in static mode, where the user remains immobile during electrical stimulation sessions. However, the ability to combine EMS with active movements opens up new perspectives. Electrical stimulation in action allows muscles to be engaged more dynamically and functionally, thereby improving training effectiveness and muscle performance. This is particularly beneficial for athletes looking to integrate EMS into sport-specific exercises, thus increasing their strength, endurance, and recovery in a more holistic way.

The shorts can be used simultaneously with an outdoor dynamic session.

Nevertheless, being in a competition period, and therefore seeking to preserve our muscle fibers, during our test, we mainly focused on using the shorts to improve recovery after long and intense rides. After these demanding sessions, we indeed found that the Integral-EMS Shorts were quite effective in reducing muscle fatigue and accelerating the recovery process through the relaxation mode. Electrical impulses promote blood circulation and help eliminate toxins accumulated in the muscles more quickly, which reduces post-workout soreness and allows for faster recovery of physical capacities.

Moreover, from what we observed, the shorts proved useful for active rest days. By using EMS at low intensity, we were able to stimulate muscles without fatiguing them, thus helping to maintain muscle tone while allowing muscles to regenerate. This active recovery function is a major asset for cyclists looking to optimize their recovery time without sacrificing their progress.

The Integral-EMS Shorts offer valuable adaptability for cyclists, whether for strengthening muscles in preparation for competitions or for accelerating recovery after intense training. Regular use can potentially improve performance and reduce the risk of injury by maintaining optimal physical condition.
