During our recent bike rides, we at 3bikes.fr had the pleasure of discovering Mulebar’s new powdered drinks. We had already been won over by this brand in October 2022 during a comprehensive test of their energy bars, compotes, and gels. Their commitment to quality remains constant, and this time, we had the opportunity to evaluate two new drinks: one for hydration and one for effort, both with a delicious red fruit flavor. Here is our in-depth analysis of these products…

Before starting our test, why use powdered drinks in cycling? In the world of cycling, hydration and nutrition play a crucial role in performance and recovery. Powdered drinks, whether isotonic or for hydration, are normally formulated to meet the needs of cyclists, particularly in:
1. Maintaining optimal hydration: Dehydration can quickly affect performance. Isotonic drinks most often contain quality electrolytes essential to replace those lost through sweat, helping to maintain the body’s fluid balance.
2. Providing sustained energy: During prolonged efforts, glycogen reserves are depleted. Effort drinks contain a combination of carbohydrates that provide a constant source of energy, thus delaying fatigue.
3. Promoting effective recovery: After exercise, it is crucial to replenish energy reserves and restore electrolyte balance. Recovery drinks contain essential nutrients that help reduce muscle soreness and accelerate muscle recovery.
4. Improving overall performance: Thanks to ingredients like BCAAs, vitamins, and minerals, these drinks help maintain endurance and performance at optimal levels, even during the most demanding rides.

Mulebar Red Fruit Hydration Drink

- 250 g = 25 doses of 10 g = 25 bottles of 500 ml
- Low in calories (less than 10 kcal per serving)
Context of Use
To fully evaluate the hydration drink, we systematically integrated it into our training sessions, particularly during demanding rides such as a hot afternoon in the countryside, where conditions led to significant water and electrolyte losses. From the first sips, the perhaps more delicately fruity red fruit taste than what we had already tasted in other brands proved to be both refreshing and subtly sweet, which allowed for pleasant and effective consumption despite the intensity of the surrounding heat.

Our Opinion
The positive impact of this drink manifested itself quite impressively. We quickly noticed a significant improvement in our hydration level, which was essential to maintain our performance at a high level during our rides. But moreover, we also felt a notable reduction in fatigue, allowing for increased endurance throughout our demanding training sessions. The balanced combination of essential electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and zinc necessarily played a crucial role in preserving our electrolyte balance, particularly vital during prolonged efforts and under difficult weather conditions.
Mulebar Red Fruit Effort Drink
Technical Specifications
- 100% natural ingredients
- AFNOR NF EN 17444 anti-doping label
- 600 g = 15 doses of 40 g = 15 bottles of 500 ml
- Maltodextrin, sucrose, and fructose for a constant energy supply
- 8 essential vitamins and 4 minerals
- BCAAs for antioxidant function
- Presence of bicarbonates to neutralize muscle acidity
Context of Use
We tested the effort drink during several intensive training sessions and even during a competition. During a long 120 km ride, including several demanding climbs, we prepared 2 600 ml bottles with two and a half scoops of this powdered drink in each, simply diluted in tap water. The tri-source combination of carbohydrates (maltodextrin, sucrose, fructose) also played a crucial role in providing sustained energy throughout the effort, adapted to varied weather conditions and demanding segments.

Our Opinion
The subtly sweet taste of the drink proved to be a real asset, particularly appreciated during the final phases of our races, where fatigue can make overly sweet drinks difficult to consume. In addition to its taste aspect, we observed tangible positive effects on our performance: constant energy that allowed us to maintain a sustained pace throughout our efforts, increased endurance that helped us overcome the most demanding moments, and noticeably faster recovery after each session. The essential vitamins and minerals certainly played a crucial role in effectively compensating for fluid and nutrient losses due to perspiration, while BCAAs provided significant support in reducing muscle fatigue, which reinforced our overall appreciation of this effort drink.
Our Verdict Based on Feel
For any tester, even an experienced one, evaluating products like Mulebar powdered drinks for hydration and effort represents a complex challenge. Subjectivity and a lack of factual elements can influence conclusions, which introduces a certain bias into the opinion given. However, despite this subjective reality, we observed significant improvements in our performance, including a notable reduction in fatigue and faster recovery after exercise. The slightly sweet but balanced taste of the drinks proved to be an appreciable advantage, making them pleasant to consume even during the most demanding rides.
Comparative Study and Confirmation of Our Feelings
We also had access to a comparative study, which analyzed 11 other competing brands in comparison with the tested Mulebar products. This analysis, covering 12 essential elements such as: the number of calories, the amount of carbohydrates (including sugars), as well as the amounts of sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, magnesium, zinc, vitamins, and the price, confirms our feelings. The results are clear: in 95.6% of the comparison lines (125 out of 137), Mulebar powders came out on top. Even more impressively, in 100% of cases, the products we tested proved to be the best in terms of low calorie content, low sugar content in favor of good carbohydrates, as well as for their excellent content of: sodium, bicarbonates, magnesium, zinc, vitamins, and BCAAs. The study also revealed that some competing products, despite their reputation for high quality, are actually loaded with sugars but poor in minerals, electrolytes, and quality carbohydrates, which is absolutely the opposite with Mulebar’s isotonic and hydration drink powders.

Differences Between the Two Powders Tested
For those who want to know the difference between the two powders tested, here are the results. Mulebar’s hydration drink is specifically designed to replenish electrolytes, particularly sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Conversely, the isotonic drink is formulated to optimize energy intake, with a notable concentration of carbohydrates and BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids), which are absent from the hydration drink.
So, in short, what to remember:
To maximize your performance and replenish electrolytes, use the hydration drink. And the isotonic drink for optimal energy intake.
For our 3bikes.fr readers, we recommend the electrolyte-rich hydration drink during activities requiring intense rehydration, such as long bike rides in hot weather, where significant mineral salt loss occurs through perspiration. In contrast, the isotonic drink, rich in carbohydrates and BCAAs, is ideal before and during intensive training sessions or competitions, where a rapid and sustained energy supply is crucial to maintain performance.
To Conclude
Mulebar powdered drinks for hydration and effort have proven to be exceptional partners for our bike rides, combining ingredient quality and proven effectiveness. The natural formulation, anti-doping certification, and pleasantly unsweetened taste greatly facilitated their consumption, even during the most intense efforts.
Our tests showed significant improvements in performance: better hydration, constant energy, and accelerated recovery, while minimizing muscle fatigue. Comparison with other brands confirmed the superiority of Mulebar products in almost all critical aspects, particularly for essential nutrient content.
These drinks stand out for their versatility and suitability for the specific needs of cyclists: the hydration drink excels in maintaining electrolyte balance during long rides in hot weather, while the effort drink provides sustained energy and muscle support during intensive training and competitions.
In conclusion, whether you are a passionate amateur or a seasoned cyclist, Mulebar powdered drinks are a reliable and effective solution to improve your hydration, support your performance, and optimize your recovery. Their adoption into your training routines could well make a difference in your next cycling adventures.
