Bikepacking is on the rise, especially among e-bike users, according to an Upway x Ipsos Digital study

A study conducted by Ipsos Digital for Upway, the French leader in reconditioned electric bikes, in April 2023 shows the growing interest of French people in cycle tourism during the summer period. 71% of electric bike owners already practice cycle tourism, making this mode of transport a significant turning point for the activity. 43% of respondents state that if they do not practice cycle tourism, they would like to try it, driven in particular by the development of France’s network of cycle routes.

To demonstrate this enthusiasm, Upway conducted a study with Ipsos Digital – Fast Facts to understand the motivations for cycle tourism and the perception of electric bikes. It was carried out among a representative national sample of 1000 French people aged 18 to 75.

The craze for cycle tourism – especially electric!

Cycle tourism continues to gain popularity in France, which remains the second most popular destination in the world to discover by bike, behind our unbeatable German neighbors. The latest updated map from Vélo & Territoires lists 59 cycle routes for a total length of 26,115 km, nearly 83% of which were already open as of January 1, 2024… and French people are embracing them!

Almost 1 in 4 French people has already engaged in this activity. This trend is particularly marked among men (29%) and for the 18-34 age group (35%). But it is electric bike users who are most keen: 71% of them have already engaged in cycle tourism. They are also more likely to cover long distances: 85% of them could consider traveling up to 50 km by electric bike on the route connecting Cannes to Monaco, for example.

Furthermore, 43% of French people who have never taken the plunge would like to try cycle tourism during their next holidays or long weekends.

Reconditioned – equipping oneself at a lower cost to engage in cycle tourism

“Reconditioned bikes have enabled the democratization of cycle tourism. It is now possible to find a bike suitable for cycle tourism, for its distances, at a lower cost, and even electric! This is one of our objectives at Upway: to offer reconditioned bikes of very high quality, at a lower price, to make soft mobility – whether for work or tourism – accessible to the greatest number. In our Gennevilliers warehouse, for example, we recondition all types of bikes: city bikes, cargo bikes, mountain bikes, folding bikes… which allows us to meet all types of needs, including cycle tourism,” declares Toussaint Wattinne, co-founder of Upway.

Indeed, 6 out of 10 French people recognize it: reconditioned bikes allow them to acquire a cheaper but equally efficient bike.

Reconditioned electric bikes are also an additional factor in encouraging French people to try cycle tourism, as new products remain costly. The advantage is also ecological, as 47% indicated that it allows for optimizing the longevity of devices so that they are part of a more virtuous ecological cycle.
