Jonathan remembers his childhood marked by constant challenges related to his weight. “When I was younger, I already had overweight issues and saw dietitians,” he recounts with a touch of nostalgia. Despite his efforts to fit in by playing football like his friends, he always felt a certain distance from the sport. His attempts to keep up with his teammates often ran into the limitations imposed by his overweight. At 11, in an attempt to help him find a more suitable physical activity, his father suggested he try cycling. This sport, which at the time seemed to be just another attempt, would one day become the engine of his transformation and radically change his life.

For a long time, Jonathan lived in denial about his weight. It was only when he was confronted with deeply embarrassing situations that he became aware of the seriousness of his condition. The inability to find clothes his size during shopping trips or the physical constraints experienced in public transport and amusement parks were brutal revelations. “When you go shopping for fashionable clothes and there’s no size for you, it’s a wake-up call,” he confides. Similarly, the painful experiences of taking up a lot of space on a plane or having difficulty securing the harness on rides reinforced this sense of urgency and discomfort.

The decision to change came as an epiphany for Jonathan. “I motivated myself,” he says with conviction. Driven by unwavering determination, he undertook a series of rigorous medical examinations and finally opted for gastric bypass surgery to help him lose weight. However, this was only the beginning of his journey.

Coming from a family of cyclists, Jonathan found in cycling much more than just a physical activity; he discovered a passion rooted in his family heritage. “My father, my uncles, my grandfather, and even my maternal grandmother all did track cycling,” he explains with pride. This family tradition became a major source of motivation, encouraging him to push himself and fully immerse himself in the world of cycling.

Jonathan’s journey was not without pitfalls. He still remembers his first major event as a junior, the Étrépagny-Gisors race. However, the challenges he faced were not limited to the physical. “My brain remained stuck when I was overweight,” he admits, highlighting the importance of psychological support, an essential aspect he unfortunately did not receive after his weight loss. This lack of psychological follow-up made his journey even more difficult, highlighting the complexity of profound transformations.

Despite these obstacles, the strength and support of his family, especially his wife and children, were crucial. “My wife, my family, my friends were a huge source of motivation,” he says with gratitude. Inspired by his deceased grandfather, Jonathan made a promise to win a race in his honor, determined to pay tribute to him through his successes.

After losing 75 kg, Jonathan decided to take out a cycling license again. Welcomed by the cycling community as a stranger, he was nevertheless filled with overflowing enthusiasm. His first race after his transformation, in Saint-Gratien, will remain etched in his memory: “I had chills before, during, and after the start.” This experience, marked by intense emotion, symbolizes his renewal and his determination to pursue his passion.

Jonathan does not let himself be dictated by rigid routines or strict training programs. “I get on my bike and I pedal to feel the sensations,” he explains. This intuitive and passionate approach allows him to stay connected to his love for cycling. His eating habits have also undergone a transformation, adopting a healthier diet rich in vegetables and fruits, thus contributing to his general well-being and his athletic performance.

Jonathan’s transformation is not limited to his slimmer figure. “People I hadn’t seen in a long time didn’t even recognize me,” he recalls, evoking the stunned reactions of those around him. His new physical identity brought profound and significant changes in all aspects of his life, redefining his self-confidence and his social interactions.

A first victory as satisfaction.

Although he has no specific goals, Jonathan dreams of one day participating in a Ufolep or FFC championship. This desire to reach new heights in cycling testifies to his continued commitment and passion for the sport. He manages to find a balance between his sporting demands and his personal life, largely thanks to the unconditional support of his wife. “She manages my children a lot, and for that, I am grateful to her,” he says with deep gratitude.

For those struggling with obesity or other health challenges, Jonathan offers a message of hope and determination. “You must not give up, anything is possible and achievable with desire and motivation,” he asserts. His own journey is living proof that “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Jonathan embodies resilience and courage, showing everyone that even the most imposing obstacles can be overcome with the necessary will and support.
