Review of Shimano’s E-TUBE App: An Essential Tool for Modern Cyclists

The cycling world has seen impressive technological advances in recent years, and the Shimano E-TUBE app is a perfect example of this. This indispensable tool lets you manage and customize your bike’s electronic components, including the Di2 drivetrain system, as well as your cyclocomputer’s menu pages, lighting systems, and electric motor systems for e-bikes.

As soon as you open the E-TUBE app, you’re greeted by a clear and intuitive interface. The app, available on computers and mobile devices, makes navigation easy thanks to well-organized menus. Users can easily access the various sections to configure, diagnose, and update their Shimano electronic components.

Equipment Required for Installation

The app is available in two versions. One is called E-TUBE Project Professional (Windows only), which requires a connection cable between the bike’s components and the computer and is most often used by bike shops to perform certain diagnostics. The other is called E-TUBE Project Cyclist, available to everyone on smartphones, and it communicates via Bluetooth. With the latest Shimano Di2 12-speed groupsets (Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105, and GRX), communication occurs directly via Bluetooth through the rear derailleur.

For the E-TUBE app to work perfectly with a Shimano Di2 11-speed groupset, a specific device must be installed. Dany Maffeis, from the Matériel Vélo store, equipped our bike with Shimano’s EW-WU111 wireless connection unit, which enables communication between the electronic components and the app. This compact module integrates easily into the frame and ensures a stable connection, which is essential for configuration and diagnostics via e-Tube.

The EW-WU111 module costs around €100.

Simplified Updates and Diagnostics

One of the main advantages of e-Tube is the ability to update the firmware of your bike’s electronic components. This feature ensures that your equipment runs with the latest improvements and bug fixes provided by Shimano. The update process is simple: just connect your bike to the app via Bluetooth or a USB cable (when using the Windows app), and follow the on-screen instructions.

In addition to updates, the app offers diagnostic tools that let you check the status of components. If a problem arises, the app identifies the source and suggests solutions to resolve it. This helps you avoid unnecessary trips to the mechanic and keeps your bike in top working condition.

Customizing Settings

E-TUBE also excels when it comes to customization. You can adjust the settings of your Di2 electronic shifters to optimize performance according to your preferences. For example, you can adjust the speed and sequence of gear shifts, which can be crucial in competitions where every second counts.

The E-TUBE app also lets you choose between three shifting modes—normal, synchronized, or semi-synchronized—and customize the number of sprockets on the cassette that are automatically shifted when switching between chainrings, for example.

For those who use an e-bike with a Shimano system, the app also lets you adjust the assist levels based on your riding conditions.

Remote Controls and Advanced Features

Another interesting feature of E-TUBE is the ability to configure remote controls. You can customize the shifter buttons to control various aspects of your bike, such as shifting gears, scrolling through compatible computer/GPS displays (most computers on the market), or turning on the lights. This allows for more intuitive and convenient control, especially during races.

In addition, the app offers advanced features such as battery monitoring. Users can monitor their battery life in real time and adjust settings to extend its lifespan.

In conclusion

The Shimano E-TUBE app is an indispensable tool for modern cyclists who want to get the most out of their Shimano electronic components. With its update, diagnostic, and customization features, it offers an enhanced user experience tailored to each cyclist’s specific needs. Whether you’re a competitive rider or a casual cyclist, E-TUBE helps you keep your bike in top condition and customize your riding experience.

While testing this app, we were particularly impressed by its ease of use and wealth of features. It’s a real asset for all cyclists equipped with Shimano electronic systems, offering them total control over their equipment and invaluable peace of mind.

E-TUBE is much more than just a management app; it’s a true companion for every bike ride. If you haven’t tried it yet, we strongly encourage you to do so to discover all the possibilities it offers. It’s free and only requires adding the EW-WU111 wireless connection unit if you’re still using an 11-speed Di2 system.
