Jacques Lagneau grew up in a family where sport was second nature. His father, a fervent sportsman, passed on this passion to him from a very young age. “My father raised us with his athletic genes, and I thank him for that,” Jacques recounts. His childhood memories are filled with moments spent playing and training outdoors, thus developing a discipline and a love for physical effort that would become the pillars of his life. This heritage shaped a life marked by the regular practice of various sports disciplines, ranging from running to weight training, including triathlon.

This sports culture forged in Jacques a philosophy of life based on perseverance and resilience. He has always considered physical activity as a means to achieve mental and physical balance, a source of happiness and health. “Why stop, especially when retirement offers greater freedom and tremendous fulfillment?” he wonders. For Jacques, retirement did not mean slowing down, but an opportunity to explore new passions and push the limits of his body and mind.

Discovering running at 60

It was at over 60 years old that Jacques discovered running, a passion that would mark a decisive turning point in his life. “I had opened a newsstand in Sannois with my ex-wife. Despite the intense hours, I started running, going out at 4 AM”, he explains. These early morning sessions, before the store opened, demonstrated iron discipline and unwavering willpower. It wasn’t just a way to stay in shape, but a true escape, a bubble of serenity in otherwise grueling days.

His determination and love for running led him to participate in numerous marathons. He didn’t just run for pleasure, but set ambitious challenges for himself. “I ran the Paris, La Rochelle, and Mont-Saint-Michel marathons,” he recounts with a glimmer of pride in his eyes. Each of these events represented an opportunity to surpass himself and test his limits. His diligence and commitment even led him to be selected for the French half-marathon championship, an achievement that crowns years of hard work and passion. “I was even selected for the French half-marathon championship,” he remembers with undisguised pride, symbolizing a personal accomplishment and an inspiring example for all those who fear aging.

Triathlon: a new passion

After excelling in running, Jacques turned to triathlon. “Following a scooter fall at 78 and another on a bike, I had to adapt my training” he confides. Despite the obstacles, he persevered, setting new goals, such as the Nice Half Ironman. “My training is often based on my feelings,” he says. Without a coach, Jacques relies on YouTube videos and advice gathered here and there to structure his sessions.

He discovered triathlon late in life.

An impressive training routine

Jacques’ preparation is impressive for someone his age. “Sunday morning, 2 to 3 hours of cycling at a steady pace. In the afternoon, 1 hour on the indoor trainer (HT) with Rouvy and, depending on fatigue, a cool run”, he details. His days are punctuated by weight training, swimming, and running sessions, reflecting rigorous discipline and an undiminished passion.

Challenges and perseverance

At 85, Jacques feels no particular difficulty as a triathlete. “The secret? Work, work, and… work”, he asserts. His ability to recover after intense training is managed by his feelings and the readings from his Garmin and Polar watches. His diet is simple but effective, aiming to maintain optimal weight while allowing himself a few pleasures, like a square of chocolate.

Family support: a driving force

Jacques emphasizes the importance of family support in his journey. “My family plays a very important role. Despite initial difficulties, a bond developed with my first wife”, he recounts. His children and grandchildren are also a constant source of motivation.

Inspired by legends

Among his sources of inspiration, Jacques admiringly mentions the famous Robert Marchand, a cycling record holder known for his extraordinary feats at an advanced age. Marchand, who continued to set records after 100, embodies for Jacques a model of determination and resilience. “Trying to beat his records after the triathlon is one of my ambitions” he confides, his eyes sparkling with challenge.

Jacques admires not only Marchand’s athletic performances but also his indomitable spirit and his ability to push the limits of age. Through his exploits, Marchand demonstrated that age is just a number and that passion and willpower can transcend physical barriers. For Jacques, following in Marchand’s footsteps means not only a personal challenge but also a way to show the world that one can continue to achieve incredible feats, regardless of age.

This ambition to beat Marchand’s records is much more than a simple sporting goal for Jacques. It is a symbol of his commitment to living each day to the fullest, to continue setting high goals, and to inspire those who might believe that aging is synonymous with limitations. For Jacques, every pedal stroke is a declaration of hope and vitality, an affirmation that the human spirit can overcome the most intimidating challenges.

Advice for those who fear aging

For those who dread aging, Jacques has a clear message: “Don’t be afraid to start late. Everyone must find their own path, but well-dosed physical activity has a very positive impact on the body and mind.”

Sport has transformed Jacques’ life. “I feel better in my own skin, in my relationship, and I would like to see more retirees realize the benefits of physical activity,” he says. Jacques dreams of serving as a guinea pig to enrich research on the aging of the body and brain.

The support of Rayon Vélo

Jacques is deeply grateful to his sponsors, and especially to the Rayon Vélo store. “Their welcome is wonderful, and I am happy to be able to bring a bit of my personality to support their success” he concludes with a smile. Behind this support are two essential figures: John Saccomandi and Marc Rebello, the store owners.

From his first visit to Rayon Vélo, Jacques was impressed by John and Marc’s passion and professionalism. “They have created an environment where every customer feels valued and encouraged”. Their store, with its state-of-the-art equipment and warm atmosphere, has become a haven for cycling enthusiasts. Jacques particularly remembers the meticulous attention of Joss, a mechanic at the store, whose attention to detail and dedication contribute to the excellence of the service. “Their support goes beyond simple material aspects; they inspire and motivate me to achieve my goals”, Jacques confides. In return, he brings his own experience and energy to Rayon Vélo, contributing to the store’s community spirit.
