Tudor Introduces Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” Watch

To mark their first participation in the legendary Giro d’Italia, TUDOR unveils a new sports watch specially designed for members of the TUDOR Pro Cycling Team. A lightweight and functional “cyclist’s” chronograph, with a carbon composite case and a high-performance Manufacture Calibre, the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” echoes the unique philosophy of a team that dares to be different.

Professional cycling is a particularly tough sport, where athletes push their physical and mental limits with every pedal stroke. It is also a dangerous sport, where impacts and accidents are not uncommon and can be violent. A watch designed for use in the peloton as well as in a breakaway must therefore achieve a high standard of performance while being easy to handle. The bike frames used by professionals are traditionally made of carbon fiber, and it is this material, more precisely a carbon composite, that TUDOR has chosen for the case of its new chronograph. Combined with titanium components, it offers the robustness and lightness essential for high-level cycling.

While mechanical properties were central to the development of this watch, its specific functions received particular attention, starting with a tachymeter scale that takes into account the typical speeds encountered during a bike race. This scale, on a chronograph, is generally calibrated for motorsports, with a minimum of 60 units per hour. The Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” offers a spiral graduation over three turns of the dial, allowing the average speed over a given distance to be established down to 20 units per hour. This detail allows cyclists to easily determine their pace.

KEY POINTS

  1. 43 mm matte black carbon composite case with fixed strap bars
  2. Fixed 60-minute graduated bezel
  3. Cycling-specific tachymeter scale on the dial
  4. Matte black dial with monobloc luminescent ceramic composite applied hour markers
  5. Manufacture Calibre MT5813, certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) with a silicon balance spring and a 70-hour power reserve
  6. “Snowflake” hands, one of the signatures of TUDOR diving watches, introduced in 1969, with Swiss SuperLumiNova® grade X1 luminous material
  7. One-piece black technical fabric strap with pin buckle

A “RACING” DIAL

The matte black dial of the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” emphasizes legibility. Its square hour markers, characteristic elements of TUDOR aesthetics since the 1960s, introduced then to obtain a larger luminous surface, are crafted from a luminescent ceramic composite that guarantees optimal readability at a glance, even in racing conditions. TUDOR’s historic angular hands, nicknamed “Snowflake,” contribute to the same functional intention. Red touches recall the colors of the TUDOR Pro Cycling Team, notably a tachymeter scale recalibrated for cycling and affixed to the 45° inclined rehaut around the dial.

A “CYCLING” FABRIC STRAP

The one-piece fabric strap is one of TUDOR’s signatures, and in 2010, it became one of the very first watch brands to offer it with its watches. Hand-woven on 19th-century Jacquard looms by the Julien Faure company in the Saint-Étienne region of France, its quality, robustness, and wearing comfort are unique. For the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” model, a highly technical strap construction was developed by TUDOR and Julien Faure. Made of durable black Jacquard fabric and equipped with a pin buckle, it is perfect for accompanying cyclists over very long distances.

MANUFACTURE CHRONOGRAPH CALIBRE MT5813

The Manufacture Chronograph Calibre MT5813, which powers the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” model, features hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph, and date functions. It also boasts the iconic matte finish

of TUDOR Manufacture Calibres, as well as an openworked monobloc tungsten rotor, another characteristic element of the brand’s movements.

Benefiting from a 70-hour “weekendproof” power reserve and a silicon balance spring, the Manufacture Chronograph Calibre MT5813 is certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), with performance exceeding the standards of this independent institution, i.e., -2/+4 seconds per day on the fully assembled watch. A high-performance movement, it was designed in the purest watchmaking tradition, with a column-wheel mechanism and a vertical clutch. In line with TUDOR’s philosophy of quality, it offers exceptional robustness and reliability, guaranteed by a battery of extreme tests applied to all the brand’s products.

Derived from the Breitling 01 Manufacture Chronograph Calibre, with a high-precision regulating organ developed by TUDOR and dedicated finishes, this movement is the result of a lasting collaboration between the two brands.

THE TUDOR MANUFACTURE

Every TUDOR watch is entirely assembled and tested according to the brand’s high standards in its new Manufacture in Le Locle, Switzerland. This state-of-the-art industrial complex, completed in 2021 after three years of construction, combines the traditional manual know-how of the watchmaker with the most advanced automated certification systems and technical production management solutions. Entirely clad in red, the TUDOR Manufacture spans four levels for a total usable area exceeding 5500 square meters. Extending from it, connected both physically and visually, is the Kenissi Manufacture, the industrial entity founded by TUDOR in 2016 to manufacture its movements. Thanks to it and a network of companies controlled by TUDOR, the brand has been able to verticalize the development and production of high-performance mechanical movements. TUDOR thus fully controls its production of strategic components and can therefore guarantee their quality.

THE TUDOR GUARANTEE

Since its creation by Hans Wilsdorf in 1926 and in accordance with his vision of the ideal watch product, TUDOR has continuously strived to create the most robust, durable, reliable, and precise watches possible. It is with this experience and confidence in the superior quality of its watches that TUDOR offers a five-year guarantee on all its products. This guarantee does not require watch registration or intermediate checks and is transferable. TUDOR recommends servicing its watches approximately every ten years, depending on the model and the wearer’s use.
