This story begins in the heart of the Olympic year, where emotions intertwine in a whirlwind of golden memories. For Miguel Martinez, the race in Sydney in 2000 was not just a competition, but a true theater where a symphony of efforts and aspirations was played out. “Before the race, my mind was entirely focused on the ultimate goal: getting on the podium, or even winning gold,” Miguel confides. Despite the bustling life of the Olympic village, his soul remained anchored in intense mental preparation, ready to face the ultimate challenge.

Miguel Martinez achieved international success at a very young age, first in cyclo-cross then in mountain biking.

Every pedal stroke during the race transformed a simple thought into one more step towards victory. “Every movement was calculated, every opponent watched carefully, every detail of the terrain evaluated, all while preserving my own essence in the tumult of the competition,” he recalls. The gold medal won in Sydney was much more than a simple reward; it marked a decisive turning point in Miguel’s life, opening the way to new challenges, particularly on the road with the Mapei team, which gave him the opportunity to compete in the Tour de France.

Miguel Martinez competed in a Tour de France with the glorious Mapei team in 2002.

But among the many peaks and triumphs, some moments are indelibly etched in memory. “The first time I was junior world champion was one of those magical experiences where you become aware of your potential and your dreams of greatness,” he shares. Managing pressure and expectations was a subtle dance between self-control and total commitment. Cyclo-cross, with its unique blend of adrenaline and technical mastery, shaped Miguel’s approach to mountain biking. Each event was an opportunity to learn and grow, with the sole motto of giving his best. And then there’s the Martinez family, a cycling dynasty where each member draws on the successes and teachings of others to support each other. The ups and downs of Miguel’s career have been life lessons, shaping his philosophy and commitment to the sport.

A family story

Because Miguel Martinez’s story also involves that of his father, polka dot jersey winner (1980) and double stage winner on the Tour de France (in 1978 and 1980), who instilled in him a kind of asceticism totally dedicated to the life of a champion. In the family, his brother Yannick, still an amateur rider, also raced professionally (from 2009 to 2018).

As for his son Lenny (professional since 2023 and already in the top 50 of the UCI ranking at less than 21 years old), he is sometimes described as a diamond to be polished. Embodying the new generation of cyclists, he carries the weight of the family legacy while embracing the modern advancements of the sport. His relationship with Miguel is a love story and a cycling story, where every pedal stroke is imbued with his father’s experience and wisdom.

Together, Miguel and Lenny form a powerful team, uniting the experience and wisdom of the old with the youth and vitality of the modern. Their relationship transcends the simple family bond to become a dynamic collaboration, where the lessons of the past illuminate the path to the future. They continue to climb the ladder of success, inspiring the next generation of cyclists with their example of determination, integrity, and passion for the sport.

At 48, Miguel Martinez still participates in a few competitions.

And before concluding, an amusing detail: we unintentionally asked Miguel 17 questions, his lucky number. “The last lap of the Olympics in 17min 17seconds and 17/100ths and the arrival at 5 PM, hence the name of the brand MIG17 (like the name of that war plane too, by the way)”. In his words, he sketches a vibrant picture of his current life, tinged with nostalgia, challenges, and new aspirations. Settled in Italy, he evokes an environment conducive to his personal fulfillment, where he finds support, friendship, and new horizons. Despite the challenges ahead, he approaches the future with optimism, aware that every challenge is an opportunity for personal growth. This introspection reveals a man in transition, ready to write a new chapter of his life with determination and open-mindedness.

This is the captivating story we hoped to tell about Miguel Martinez. A flamboyant epic, transcending the simple framework of cycling to become a symphony.
