Roxane Fournier was not always the cycling champion the world knows today. Her journey to the top began modestly, in the quiet streets of the Parisian suburbs. “At the beginning of my passion for cycling, I knew this road would be mine. It was more than just a desire; it was a certainty.” From a young age, she was drawn to speed, to the feeling of freedom that only cycling can offer. Her first rides were the prelude to an extraordinary adventure, an adventure that would take her to the four corners of the world, on the most demanding roads on the planet.

Roxane Fournier started cycling very early.

From the Parisian suburbs to the winding country roads, Roxane forged her path with determination. “Even though I struggled and suffered, I loved the atmosphere, the vibe, the crowd on the roadside. From my beginnings, I knew it was on these races that I wanted to perform.” Her first competitions were a mix of excitement and apprehension, but each event brought her a little closer to her dream. She was inspired by the great names in cycling, by their legendary exploits and their unwavering determination. “Even though I never really had idols in cycling. When I was younger, I liked Jan Ullrich.”

Victories with the French national team as a junior…

Professional cycling is a demanding world, where only the strongest survive. Roxane learned the hard way that every victory requires sacrifice, that every success is the result of hard work and an iron will. “Cycling is such a tough sport where you develop your mental strength, rigor, and resilience enormously. All these qualities also contribute to everyday life.” She also discovered the importance of team spirit, solidarity, and camaraderie. “Cycling is an individual sport practiced in a team, and sometimes many people don’t understand that. But you can’t win alone.”

And track titles.

A professional career is also made of choices. “Moving from the best team in the world (SD Worx) to a return to France (with St Michel-Auber 93) was a personal choice. A strong choice since I myself decided to break my contract to return to a French team.” As at every stage of her journey, she continued to move forward, push her limits, and pursue her dream with unwavering determination.

Roxane Fournier was part of the best team in the world, SD Worx, until 2022.

Roxane’s career has not been without its bumps. In 2023, she faced one of the biggest challenges of her life when health problems jeopardized her career. “The year 2023 was marked by a long break due to my iliac artery operation. Ultimately, the hardest part was getting the diagnosis because I was suffering so much but I didn’t immediately know what I had.” But rather than being discouraged, she rose to the challenge, fighting to regain her place on the bike and resume her career. “I realized once again that I still had a very strong resilience and, above all, an intact passion for cycling. I could have stopped cycling, but deep down, I felt I still had a lot of desire.”

Injured in 2023, Roxane Fournier decided to continue her career.

Today, as she contemplates the final stretch of her career, Roxane looks to the future without fear. Her legacy extends beyond podiums and medals; it lies in her example of perseverance and passion. “The most important thing when you are injured is patience. You shouldn’t go too fast, just listen to your body and do things step by step.” She hopes to continue to inspire future generations, to show them that nothing is impossible if you believe in your dreams and work hard to achieve them. “For me, the most important thing was to rediscover the pleasure and the reason why I still cycle.”

Through her victories and challenges, Roxane Fournier embodies the indomitable spirit of cycling, where every kilometer covered is a journey into the unknown, an exploration of oneself and the limits of humanity. “Women’s professional cycling sometimes goes very fast, perhaps a little too fast. It is therefore important not to skip steps and to proceed gradually.”

As the twilight of her career approaches, she prepares to write the next chapter of her story. “I will make my decision this summer. But in any case, I am proud of the career I have had.” Whether on or off the bike, she will continue to push boundaries, defy conventions, and inspire those who have the courage to follow their dreams. “Always keep this notion of pleasure, be serious, well-surrounded. You must also keep your values, always be respectful, and above all, realize how lucky you are to make your passion your profession.”

On Eurosport, she works alongside Steve Chainel and Guillaume Di Grazia.

In the captivating world of cycling, Roxane Fournier will forever remain a legend, a shining star in the firmament of champions. Her story is a reminder that, even in the darkest moments, even when the road seems endless, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. And for those who dare to dream, for those who dare to believe, that light shines brighter than ever, illuminating the path to accomplishment and success.
