In a press release, the French Cycling Tourism Federation (FFCT) welcomes the proposals adopted by the Law Commission in favor of greater protection for cyclists on our roads.

In May 2023, the FFCT, in conjunction with the association Mon vélo est une vie (My Bike is a Life), called for stronger legal protection for cyclists and pedestrians, with severe penalties for physical harm caused to them, following a rise in tragic incidents.
The adoption of an amendment on Tuesday, January 23, by the Law Commission of the National Assembly, is an encouraging step. It proposes to adjust complementary penalties for license suspension and cancellation based on whether the harm inflicted on vulnerable individuals by a motorized vehicle driver was intentional or unintentional. This partially addresses the alarming lack of safety experienced by cyclists on our roads.
Thus, in the case of intentional harm, the complementary penalty would increase from 5 years to 10 years. The Federation hopes for a favorable outcome from the Assemblies to implement these provisions as quickly as possible.
The Federation continues to call for:
– The inclusion of cyclists in driver’s license training and the School Road Safety Certificate (ASSR);
– Regulatory measures to facilitate bicycle use and understanding by motorized users (road sign adjustments, reduced speed limits in certain cases, recognition of shared central lanes, reinforced priority for the most vulnerable users, etc.).
Finally, the French Cycling Tourism Federation reiterates its call for a “Grenelle de la sécurité” (national forum on safety) for cyclists to bring all road stakeholders to the table and discuss concrete measures.
