Christelle discovered her passion for cycling at the age of 7, influenced by her father. Her first steps in the world of cycling were with the VSSFPB club (now PAC) with Pascal Noël. At just 12 years old, she participated in two French cycling school championships, thus beginning a promising career. Later, as a minime, she joined the CSM Villeneuve la Garenne club led by Gérard Van Den Abele, where she excelled on track and road.

Successes accumulated with a victory at the French sprint championship in 1996 and the establishment of a French 500m record. Her performances led her to the Pôle France in Hyères, where she joined the French sprint team, sharing the track with talents like Félicia Balanger. Later, she continued her journey in the Master category, winning 14 French championship titles, 2 European championship titles, and a world championship title in 2015.

However, the year 2016 marked a heartbreaking turning point in Christelle’s life with the paralysis of her left leg. Faced with this monumental obstacle, Christelle refused to give in. She emotionally emphasizes: “I received extraordinary support from Gérard Van Den Abele”. In a surge of determination, she engaged in intense rehabilitation and made the audacious decision to reconnect with cycling. Her resolve was so unshakeable that, despite her surgeon’s grim predictions (Editor’s note: at this point, tears threaten as Christelle recalls this poignant moment in her life), she got back on her bike in February 2017, barely a year after the incident, opting for Powercranks with dissociated cranks.
Her beginnings in para-cycling were not without challenges. She sought information from the FFH on classifications and embarked on her first para-sport competition at the French championships in October 2017. These beginnings marked the start of a new phase in her career. The transition to para-cycling required adaptations, notably the professional design of her bike with the help of Kronos and the opening of a para-cycling section in her club. Intensive training remained the key to her success, and she discovered the need to constantly adapt. Christelle reminds us that “the support of my family in this unpredictable life project is invaluable, as is that of my friends and indeed the entire cycling community”. Her club played a crucial role in covering the financial costs for adapting her bike.

Her victories in para-cycling are numerous, but the emotional peak came with the bronze medal won at the track world championships at home, on the brand new velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. She became a symbol of success, proving that the transition from the able-bodied world to para-sport can be crowned with success.

On the eve of her 44th birthday, Christelle Ribault approaches the future of her para-cycling career with wisdom. Although she describes herself as old in the competitive context, she enthusiastically embraces the challenges ahead, particularly the track world championships in March 2024. She also maintains an open mind regarding her potential participation in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. In the meantime, her designation as one of the Olympic torchbearers testifies to a fully deserved recognition from sports and Olympic committees.
Her message to those facing similar obstacles resonates as a life lesson: “With hard work, willpower, and a strong support system, anything is possible”. She concludes by sharing her mantra: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, inviting everyone to embrace challenges with unshakeable resilience.
Christelle Ribault, much more than a champion, becomes a source of inspiration that transcends limits, symbolizing the infinite power of passion and perseverance.
