In 2015, Adrian Bran discovered cycling at 48 years old. He had never played sports before.

The first time Adrian Bran stumbled upon the Tour de France on television was a revelation for him, even though he didn’t understand anything at first. Fascinated by Jean-Paul Olivier’s commentary, he was drawn to the aesthetics of the sport, although he didn’t yet grasp the nuances of the yellow jersey or the general classification. It was this enthusiasm that prompted him to buy his first bike in 2015. “I bought myself a Giant, without even knowing my size,” he admits.

The beginning of his cycling career was marked by technical challenges, frequently falling with clipless pedals. Not easy at 48, especially when you’ve never played sports. His cycling apprenticeship then took root within the Orsay club in the 91 region. “There I met Hervé Signour, the coach, who quickly discerned my potential,” he specifies. Despite the initial difficulties related to this learning, Adrian persevered, losing 20 kilos in one year thanks to intensive training and strict dietary discipline.

His tumultuous past as a Romanian refugee who lived undocumented for 12 years and endured prison under Ceaușescu intertwines with his cycling journey. From the decision to illegally leave his country at the age of 18, through difficult and tragic failures to a successful escape to France in 1995, and finally, to obtaining papers as a precious key thanks to the help of a determined lawyer, all these elements form the backdrop of an exceptional and moving life to discover.

His meeting with Daniela, a Romanian nurse who also arrived in France, marked the beginning of a new era. “Together, we built a solid life despite the challenges,” he recalls when mentioning his marriage in 1999 and the arrival of their daughter in 2000. Adrian, who became a business owner in interior renovation in 2002, achieved rapid professional success thanks to his talent and the network provided by Gaël, his lawyer friend.

On the bike, Adrian’s passion for time trials proved to be a deliberate choice. He prefers the singularity of this intense effort: “My strategic skills are poor; I’m not good at winning with a peloton. I race with guys who have always cycled. That’s why I prefer the time trial.” His discovery of cycling may be late, but in any case, his solitary engagement with his machine represents a powerful metaphor for his life.

Time trialing is a true passion for Adrian Bran.

Adrian’s physical transformation, from 100 kg to 74 kg, naturally stemmed from his commitment to cycling. This process led him to reconsider his diet, gradually abandoning unhealthy eating habits to adopt a healthier lifestyle. He also shares his simple but effective advice for anyone wishing to undertake a similar transformation: “There’s no miracle. Lots of sport and as little sugar as possible.” And a simple rule: “No sport: no sugar and lots of vegetables.”

During this interview, we also discover his love for beautiful equipment, which has evolved over the years, from simple bikes with mechanical transmissions and no disc brakes to state-of-the-art machines like the Specialized S-Works. SL6, then 7 and 8, and this speed machine, the S-Works Shiv. “My new coach played a decisive role in my equipment choices,” he specifies, emphasizing the importance of quality equipment in cycling performance.

His cycling adventures also lead him to discover France.

As a business owner who juggles his responsibilities with an impressive annual mileage of 20,000 km, Adrian reveals the secrets of his organization. Each training plan from the coach is a sacred obligation, requiring anticipation, discipline, and dedication.

Looking to the future, Adrian now dreams of reaching the podium in the time trial at the French Masters Championships. Because yes, Adrian now holds dual nationality, and he proclaims his pride in being French, despite an accent that still betrays his origins a little. He evokes the lessons learned from previous years, explaining the importance of overcompensation before competitions. His future as a cyclist continues to evolve with the precision of a power meter, bringing him ever closer to his ultimate dream. Every kilometer becomes a step towards a future where cycling remains the living symbol of resilience and newfound freedom for Adrian.
