Our discussion with Anthony Colas starts strong and quickly transports us to memorable moments of his life as a high-level athlete. When asked about the strongest moments of his career, Colas emotionally recalls some of his victories and selections for the French national team. And yet, no regret colors his memories, revealing the passion that guided his journey. The transition from high-level cyclocross to other aspects of life marked a turning point in 2013 or 2014. His quest for a road career encountered obstacles, but this decision opened the way to a new adventure. Colas, now a logistics coordinator and consultant, reflects wisely on this transition.

Anthony Colas has worn the French cyclocross team jersey on several occasions.

Colas skillfully juggles his role as logistics coordinator, consultant for a cycling podcast, and commentator on Eurosport. And as a father of two young boys, his life is, as he says, “a dynamic balance between professional and family responsibilities”.

At 38, the former athlete juggles activities, including his family life as a father.

Passing on the cycling legacy

Former champion and father, Colas shares his experience with young cyclists. Both detached and involved, he lets his own children enjoy cycling, while continuing to invest in sharing knowledge within the cycling community. Moreover, the balance between family, work, and cycling is a delicate dance that Colas performs with grace. His circle of friends, essential in this juggling act, provides valuable support, demonstrating that social connection is just as vital as pedaling.

Anthony Colas has always been a rider appreciated for his keen analysis of the terrain.

Colas even got back on the bike this year through Gravel. It was precisely on this machine that we found him. In the dirt paths that border the Oise between Boran and up to the confluence where this gentle river flows into the Seine, at Le Pointil on the right bank and downstream from the center of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in the Yvelines department. Always sharing, it was he who introduced us to Komoot, the famous route planner that guides outdoor enthusiasts, whether cyclists or hikers. What we discovered during this outing – which Colas obviously had not perceived as an opportunistic interview on my part – was his intact love for freedom, which he finds in this new trendy discipline. He adds: “my motivation to remain athletically involved lies in the need to feel good about myself”. Keep this confidential, but he confided a secret to us: he even plans to qualify for the Gravel World Championships in 2024…

It is with the practice of Gravel that Anthony Colas intends to regain a taste for competition.

And if you don’t ride with him, you can always listen to him. Indeed, Anthony is also a consultant on Eurosport. Colas shares what goes on behind the scenes, emphasizing that this unique opportunity blossomed thanks to his close friend, the other essential figure in French cyclocross, Steve Chainel. This bond of friendship opened a new door for Colas, allowing him to share his expertise with a wider audience. His role, essential in the broadcast of cyclocross events, extends far beyond simple narration. Indeed, Colas is committed to making the technical aspects of cyclocross accessible to all spectators, thus offering a deep understanding of this demanding discipline.

The exercise of becoming a consultant on Eurosport, although requiring an initial period of adaptation, has transformed into an authentic source of pleasure for Colas. The challenge of articulating the subtleties of cyclocross in a clear and captivating manner is for him an obvious passion, a passion that is transmitted to our homes with each broadcast. This privileged experience is not only gratifying for him, but it also enriches the visual experience of all cyclocross enthusiasts.

An unalterable passion for cyclocross

Anthony Colas’ tireless passion for cyclocross is a true symphony that punctuates six to seven months of his year. Colas’ commitment is not limited to promoting this wonderful discipline; he actively celebrates it. He fervently invites aficionados to experience it live, to feel the unique atmosphere that emanates from cyclocross races. His role as a consultant, despite the impartiality required, in no way hinders his obvious admiration for the strength and finesse of Wout van Aert, an affection that subtly shines through his enlightened comments. As a commentator, Colas transcends the traditional role of a consultant. His authentic interaction with current riders adds a human dimension to his perspective, thus enriching the viewers’ experience. He highlights, with illuminating clarity, that the current cyclocross superstars, namely Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, and Tom Pidcock, are propelling this discipline to exceptional heights of visibility. Colas, while acknowledging Van der Poel’s particular brilliance this year, sheds light on the greatness of these athletes who transform every race into a spectacle worthy of an epic. An experience that, according to Colas, transcends television and finds its peak in the palpable fascination of a live race.
