Our discussion this Sunday morning quickly takes us to the heart of spring 2023, one month before the 2023 French amateur cycling championship. Killian retreats to the mountains, climbing cols, thus sharpening his determination to reach the summit on D-day. The gentle spring breezes of Brittany did not temper his energy, but rather fanned the inner flame of this young champion. The cols served as a backdrop for his preparation, offering a foretaste of the ascent to come on the demanding roads of Hazebrouck-Cassel, the scene of the French championship.

This spring immersion reached its brilliant climax with the acquisition of the prestigious title of French champion. One month after Killian’s ascent in the mountains, this intense preparation found its fulfillment in early summer 2023 on the demanding French championship course, featuring two emblematic climbs: the cobbled climb of the Porte de Dunkerque (1.9 km at 4%) and the climb of the Porte d’Aire (1.2 km at 8%). A 155 km course, and at the finish: the title of French champion, consecrating his sustained efforts and unwavering commitment. This first summer weekend, a symbol of renewal, allowed Killian to reach new heights, each pedal stroke becoming an advance towards the most beautiful sporting glory.

In the brilliance of this blue-white-red jersey, Killian’s personality remains intact. Authentic, he masters stress and imposes pressure on himself only when necessary, remaining true to himself. This tricolor jersey, far beyond a simple garment, is just a second skin imbued with sweat, effort, and dreams.

And now with his childhood dream realized, Killian aspires to the unattainable. On his brand new Van Rysel bike, delivered a few weeks ago by his new employer, the AG2R continental team, he is already setting his sights on the World Tour for 2025, resolutely focused on mountain races. The snow-capped peaks and winding roads of iconic cols become the stage where he wishes to engrave his name, each turn and each climb symbolizing a metaphorical ascent that transcends the simple framework of competition.

Asked about his inspiration, Killian cites Julian Alaphilippe for his versatility, but states that “mountain races are his true playground”. 2024 will be the year he intends to prove himself, and the mountains, with their dizzying challenges and breathtaking panoramas, will be the setting for the next act of his quest for glory.

In his predominantly non-cycling entourage, Killian finds new support. His coach Coralie Sero and VCP Loudéac become his pillars, contributing to his most judicious choices. Cycling, often perceived as a solitary sport, reveals itself, according to him, to be “a collective epic where every pedal stroke is supported by a dedicated team working in the shadows”.

The challenges looming on the horizon, notably the French cyclo-cross championship in Camors in a few days and stage races with mountainous sections, stand as crucial stages on Killian’s tortuous path. These events trace a path that transcends simple paved roads, thus orchestrating a symphony leading to the realization of his dreams.

“Victory remains my mission,” he says, but Killian insists on the importance of staying motivated, even when his legs protest. The twists and turns of his career are strewn with challenges, each trial becoming an opportunity to grow, to improve, and to prove his resilience.

Outside of cycling, Killian cultivates his connection to the family farm, adding an earthy dimension to his journey. His advice to young people is simple: “take your time and savor every moment of pedaling”. Off the circuits, he draws from his roots, cultivating not only the land but also the values that guide him on the roads of cycling.

Pop music sets the rhythm for his training sessions, music becoming the heartbeat of his training, a symphony accompanying every climb, every sprint, testifying to his ardent passion. His pre-race meals? “Pasta Bolognese or Carbonara, and in the morning, potatoes, fried eggs, and ham. Culinary traditions intertwine with sporting rituals, creating a unique recipe for success fueled as much by food as by determination”.

Asked about a memorable anecdote, Killian recalls “the Étape du Tour 2023 Annemasse/Morzine, where the tricolor jersey was worn to the cheers of the public”. He assures us: “the memories of that day remain etched”, not only in his memory, but also in the hearts of all who witnessed that magical moment.

Through all the peaks and valleys of his career, Killian nevertheless retains the memory of an accident that temporarily interrupted his race. “A fracture of both kneecaps, three months of rehabilitation, then nine months without competition”. This forced break, far from being a hindrance, proved to be a chapter of growth, a period of rebirth that forged the current Killian, stronger, more resolute than ever.

More than a gift a day early, this meeting on Christmas Eve 2023 and these few shared pedal strokes on the roads of the Gulf of Morbihan, invite us to reflect on the future, a delicate promise nestled in each pedal stroke of Killian Verschuren. He embodies the spirit of cycling as a metaphor for life, where each kilometer represents an unexplored adventure, each competition a personal epic, and each victory the consecration of a tangible dream…

Let’s stay connected, not only to Killian’s sporting trajectory, but also to the philosophical lesson he offers us. His journey is written with a pen composed of passion and determination, on the winding roads that lead to the summits of world cycling, thus symbolizing our own path strewn with obstacles and triumphs. In every turn, in every climb, lies a profound lesson on perseverance and the relentless pursuit of excellence. So, let’s stay connected, not only to future athletic exploits, but also to the timeless poetry that each of Killian’s pedal strokes will inscribe in the history of Breton cycling.
