Developed with Filippo Ganna and manufactured in Italy, the Northwave Veloce Extreme uses a Powershape HT sole that would offer 4% more power compared to the previous generation, according to the Italian brand.
This new shoe model has been validated by Filippo Ganna, hour record holder and Olympic champion, and its impact has been measured concretely and quantitatively. Entirely designed and manufactured in Italy, the Veloce Extreme is also the culmination of a brand new project based on thirty years of experience at the highest level and fueled by the constant desire to push the boundaries of innovation.
The shoe was designed in synergy with a true champion, and in collaboration with some fifty testers. Ganna raced the entire 2023 season with the Veloce Extreme on his feet, covering more than 10,000 km in competition, from sprints to time trials and from the Poggio of Milan-Sanremo to the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix. His new shoes did not go unnoticed, with their remarkable aesthetics and especially their high tail design, which extends the sole well beyond the heel.
+ 4% power, + 9% stability according to the brand
The Veloce Extreme is an innovative shoe both in its shape and its essence. This is due to the technical solutions patented by Northwave, which aim to minimize energy dispersion in all phases of pedaling, both in traction and pushing. The Veloce Extreme has been the subject of a biomechanical study on the efficiency of the new PowerShape HT (High Tail) sole compared to the Powershape, Northwave’s most performing sole until now.
More specifically, sprint, progressive and constant power tests were performed. The result is clear: the Powershape HT sole of the Veloce Extreme would lead to a significant increase in the minimum internal rotation of the foot during pedaling. This reduces the overall rotation of the foot, thereby optimizing pressure on the pedal and reducing ankle movements in the frontal plane.
Compared to the Powershape sole, the Powershape HT would increase stability by 9%, reduce perceived effort by 15% (measured by RPE, “Rate of Perceived Exertion”) and, most importantly, increase maximum power by 4%. All this compared to the previous high-end sole model used by Northwave.
The Veloce Extreme in detail
The Powershape HT sole is made of 100% unidirectional carbon with a stiffness index of 15, the highest on the Northwave scale. The exclusive High Tail structure features an asymmetrical design that allows the heel to find its natural position in the shoe while supporting the inside of the foot. The patented Powershape system for the arch provides additional support and comfort.
The rubber heel pad is replaceable and extends the life of the shoe. Large ventilation grooves promote thermoregulation and internal air circulation, while the sole is also compatible with Speedplay pedals, as is customary with Northwave.
Northwave’s ARS (“Anatomic Reticular Support”) technology returns in its 2.0 version, now even lighter. ARS 2.0 provides additional support to the foot, wraps and protects it thanks to the dial system on the upper part. In synergy with the Powershape HT sole, the foot is held in the correct position to maximize power transfer to the pedals.
The micro-perforated upper features an overlapping construction for an optimal fit and uniform closure without pressure points. It is complemented by laser cutouts that improve ventilation and thermoregulation to maximize comfort.
The two panels that make up the upper thus slide inward during tightening thanks to the X-Dial SLW3 closure system, patented by Northwave. The dual dial concept offers a high-precision two-zone closure combined with micrometric adjustment. Each pair of Veloce Extreme also comes with two insoles, both dual-density, for an even more precise and customizable fit: the first offers a thickness of 5 mm (Slim Fit) and the other 3 mm (Regular Fit).
The shoes are available online and in stores in sizes 36 to 48 (with half sizes from 39.5 to 45.5), in white and black. They weigh 295 grams (in size 42) and their recommended retail price is € 399.99.
