These routes are highly anticipated by fans worldwide eager to discover the roads and climbs where they can directly compare themselves to the pros’ achievements. To meet their enthusiasm, media outlets can also integrate them into online articles and web pages using Strava’s new embed codes, which allow direct interaction with all the details of millions of routes available on the platform.
THE ICONIC SEGMENTS OF THE 2024 TOUR
When a person records a bike ride on Strava, they discover the sections of road they have covered. This can be a small local hill or a major climb. These are called “segments”. Each time they pass through a segment, they automatically set a time that they can compare with those of other users. Those who achieve the best time earn the title of KOM or QOM (for King / Queen Of the Mountain). 85% of Tour pros are active on Strava all year round. Everyone can thus compare their performance on the same segments.
Each stage of the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec ZWIFT uses segments created by Strava users. For each stage, the organization selects several official segments that then become the reference for journalists and fans worldwide.
The three iconic segments of the 2024 edition are:
Puy Mary: strava.com/segments/35625601
- KOM: Tadej Pogačar, since September 11, 2020 (see activity)
- Strava anecdote: Tadej Pogačar earned this KOM after attacking on the hardest slopes of the climb during the thirteenth stage of the 2020 Tour de France. A few days later, the Slovenian won his first Tour de France.
Col de la Bonnette: strava.com/segments/35625639
- Strava anecdote: Legendary KOMs are not reserved for professionals, and this segment proves it. You have to go down to sixth place in the ranking to find the first professional profile, in this case, Frenchman Julien Bernard, a rider for Lidl-Trek.
L’Alpe d’Huez: strava.com/segments/683473
- QOM: Illi Gardner, since June 26, 2021 (see activity)
- Strava anecdote: Illi Gardner took this QOM from her British compatriot Emma Pooley, who had been leading the ranking for almost nine years. The cyclist particularly excels in the mountains, as she also holds the women’s world record for Everesting.
THE INCREDIBLE IMPACT OF THE TOUR ON CYCLING PRACTICE
Data recorded by Strava on the official segments of the 2023 Tour reveals the incredible impact of the world’s biggest race on cycling practice in the regions hosting the event.
Five examples are particularly indicative of this enthusiasm:
- Côté de Pike: 180 cyclist passages in 2022 versus 694 after the Tour de France in 2023, an increase of 286%.
- Jaizkibel: 946 cyclist passages in 2022 versus 2,094 after the Tour de France in 2023, an increase of 121% on one of the most iconic climbs in the Basque Country.
- Col du Feu: 291 cyclist passages in 2022 versus 10,288 after the Tour de France in 2023, an increase of 892%. This was the first time this climb was on the Tour de France program.
- Col de la Loze: 701 cyclist passages in 2022 versus 2,284 after the Tour de France in 2023, an increase of 226% on the hardest climb of this edition.
- Col du Tourmalet: 2,238 cyclist passages in 2022 versus 3,627 after the Tour de France Femmes avec ZWIFT in 2023, an increase of 62% on one of the most famous climbs in the world.
THE ROUTE DESIGNER AT THE SERVICE OF THE TOUR
Each year, Thierry Gouvenou, race director of the Tour de France, uses Strava to innovate in designing the route.
He stated: “Between the segments and the global activity map, Strava gives me the ability to visualize the most frequented roads by cyclists of all backgrounds to enrich the volume of information needed to design the Tour route. Strava also highlights the routes favored by professional male and female riders for their training, which allows me to design stages that, beyond meeting the needs of the race, stick as closely as possible to the very values of cycling: effort and discovery.”
Strava also allows you to delve into the details of the L’Étape du Tour route, the world’s most famous sportive. Coveted by 16,000 amateurs, this sporting challenge allows Tour enthusiasts to experience the legend of the Grande Boucle, on the same mountain roads and under the same conditions as the professional cyclists of the Tour de France.
L’Étape du Tour: Nice – Col de la Couillole (see route)
To better highlight the Tour routes, as well as any other public route created on the application, Strava has updated its feature that allows embedding a route in an online article or web page.
Now interactive, these embeds make it possible to view a route in 3D, choose between 6 map backgrounds, and also allow you to explore by zooming or discover the different custom waypoints without leaving the page where the route is embedded.
