The MPCC more determined than ever

The MPCC (Movement for Credible Cycling), at its annual General Assembly, laid the groundwork for its 18th year of existence, with the desire to measure the progress made, to discuss the present, but also and above all the future. When the movement was created in 2007, in London, at the start of the Tour de France, numerous scandals were tarnishing cycling. To improve the credibility of their sport, several team managers, believing in the principle of volunteerism, decided to subject themselves to stricter rules, complementary to those of the governing bodies. Today, 70% of first or second division teams are members of the MPCC.

IN 17 YEARS, THEIR COMMITMENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN DRIVEN BY A FIRM WILL: TO BE AN ACTOR IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DOPING.
  • This was the case when the MPCC played its role as a whistleblower to WADA on the subject of corticosteroids and tramadol.
  • This was the case when the MPCC carried out, in twelve years, more than 4,000 controls to curb the abusive use of corticosteroids, until their prohibition by WADA.
  • This was the case when the MPCC unreservedly supported the increase in budgets to support the action of the International Testing Agency (ITA).
  • This was the case when the MPCC integrated into its regulations the principle of self-suspension of a team after two positive cases in the last twelve months, until the UCI adopted this rule.
  • This was the case when the MPCC observed, each year, 100% compliance by its members with internal regulations that have never changed a single line.
  • This was the case from 2007 to 2023, and it will continue.
  • This was not the case when in 2015, 2018 and 2019, two teams and two federations withdrew from the MPCC, in disagreement with the internal regulations on cortisol levels.
  • Nor was it the case when in 2016, another member team did not respect the internal rule aiming not to engage a rider who had been suspended for more than six months.

The top six men’s teams in the 2023 UCI world ranking, and the top three women’s teams, are not members of the MPCC. All teams are strongly encouraged, by their status, to join the movement by January 1st. Several of their riders have already chosen to commit individually.

Actors, and even proactive

The MPCC sees its action supported by ITA. For 2024, it proposes that the financial participation of teams in ITA no longer be a fixed contribution, but indexed to the budget of each team, in a context where a two-speed cycling is emerging in terms of financial resources.

The MPCC is invited each year by the UCI to its Professional Cycling Council (CCP) as an observer. The MPCC also benefits, unreservedly, from the support of the Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme, determined each year to award his wild cards only to teams that are members of the movement.

The MPCC continues and will continue to commit to respecting stricter regulations, complementary to those of the governing bodies. To teams that are not members, it says: come! Be actors! The latent climate of suspicion, which persists, requires action, obliges to “keep the light on” and imposes commitment.

More than 600 female and male riders, more than 400 team staff members have joined the MPCC individually, on a voluntary basis. To the others: come, you too! To their employers: let them have the free choice to commit according to their ethical and personal convictions.
