Officine Mattio presents the new SL, its iconic Super Leggera

With its new SL model, the brand from Cuneo reinvents the concept of a “super light” bike by taking Officine Mattio’s previous iconic model and renewing its form, design, and features.

The SL is the most agile and high-performance road bike in Officine Mattio’s catalog. As its name suggests, it is a Super Leggera (Super Light) model.

In 2018, the first prototype was born from a clear need: to lighten the frame. Indeed, the introduction of disc brakes, while allowing for better braking, significantly increased the weight of bikes. The goal was achieved in December 2018: the SL appeared in the Officine Mattio range and immediately established itself as the flagship bike in its road model catalog.

Officine Mattio is proud to present the new SL today, which combines tradition and modernity and, like its predecessor, is 100% Italian.

The SL is intended for cyclists who love climbs, but it also offers excellent stability and reliability on descents. However, unlike its predecessor, which was significantly more traditional, this bike also attracts the attention of younger riders.

The new SL is characterized by its elegant geometry, safety, stability, and comfort on the road, and above all, by its incomparable lightness.

A bit of history

To create his first SL, Giovanni Monge Roffarello, CEO of Officine Mattio, set an ambitious goal: the frame + fork set should not weigh more than one kilogram. To do this, he sought out a leading Italian company in composite materials, and after studies and tests, both parties achieved an extraordinary result, thanks in particular to the innovative IwS technique. The result is a frame + fork set weighing only 1.05 kg, which is light, strong, and reliable.

The first series of SL was launched in 2018; the second, released a few years later, features a modernized fork with a “D-shaped” steerer tube to allow for cable and housing integration. This is how the SL became the lightest bike with integrated cables.

Technical specifications of the new SL

Today, Officine Mattio presents the 2023 version of the SL, which represents a true revolution in terms of form: the frame geometry has been modified, and the fork has been specifically designed for this model.

The frame sees modifications to the geometry of the tubes: the top and down tubes are no longer cylindrical, as on previous models, but have a more “flattened” shape. This design significantly reduces lateral stress and improves stability, thus promoting athlete performance.

The top tube’s slope is different from the previous model, with a 2 cm more sloping incline: the frame is more compact and therefore more reactive. Finally, at the rear triangle, the unique junction between the upper and lower chainstays has been designed to ensure maximum stability.

The new SL is equipped with an innovative fork and a wide tire clearance that allows for mounting tires up to 40 mm. Its particular shape also increases riding comfort, while making the bike more reactive than its predecessor.

The reach and stack are identical to those of the previous model, while the fork height has been increased by 8 mm. As a result, the head tube is lower, and the down tube and top tube are closer together. This strengthens stability and improves bike handling.

The SL’s fork and frame are made of T1100 G carbon fiber, impregnated with a special resin that makes the whole very homogeneous, rigid, and at the same time, incredibly light. The new SL frame weighs only 660 g (size M without paint).

For all these reasons, the bike proves to be very light with an extremely reactive frame, while offering an excellent level of comfort and performance.

New graphics

The SL’s painting process, like that of all Officine Mattio models, is entirely done by hand in the brand’s paint shop located in Piedmont (Italy).

This new model also stands out with a new painting technique: the colors, manually applied with a sprayer, are nuanced, demonstrating that, at Officine Mattio, the difference is in every nuance.

“We feel a lot of pride and satisfaction, because we wanted once again to offer our customers a super light bike, but even more agile and comfortable. One of the goals we had set for ourselves was to modernize the model while retaining the lightness characteristics of this bike, making it more reactive and maintaining all its agility and pedaling comfort. We have no doubt that anyone who tries it will be able to say that the mission has been accomplished,” said Giovanni Monge Roffarello, CEO of Officine Mattio.

Customizable with the configurator

The new SL model, like all bikes from the Cuneo brand, can be imagined by the user in all components and colors, thanks to Officine Mattio’s online configurator, which allows for designing a custom bike based on the builds and graphics that will make the product truly unique. The online configurator also allows for customizing the logo color.

The new SL is available in four standard catalog builds: Shimano Ultegra DI2 – SRAM Red AXS – Shimano Dura Ace Di2 – Campagnolo Super Record WRL.

There are 8 standard sizes available: from 48 to 63. Like other models, Officine Mattio offers a frame size customization service for the new SL, adapting it to each customer’s individual dimensions.

Recommended retail price: starting from €10,240 excl. VAT.

The frame kit is available starting from €6,300 excl. VAT with integrated handlebar and Officine Mattio seatpost.
